I have been fishing the bank for a few years now. I have a job and have been saving up and am not sure if i should get just a kayak or save big and get a jon boat. thing is, jon boat would take me a long time to save for cuz of trailer and the boat itself plus motors etc thatd go in the thousands. I can get a nice kayak for under 1k though so im not really sure which way i should go. I feel like a kayak would be a better option but im not sure

A kayak will teach you to be a better fisherman because you are more likely to take your time fishing each spot

Kayak. You can transport on a smaller vehicle, no trailer necessary, no gas costs, more drop in options, no property taxes, low maintenance, easier storage, the list goes on. If you want to drop more money, buy a pedal kayak (not that I have one), so you can free up your hands to do more fishing.

Kayak. After purchasing confine to save and by the time you’re close to the cost of a boat you’ll know how much you like kayak fishing. If you don’t then you can sell it or include it as a trade in the purchase of a jon boat

I vote kayak for now. Imo, they're about as cheap and maintenance free as you can get. Try looking at used ones, you may be able to save hundreds if the market is very good in your area. Check the bottom for holes/deformations, ask how it was stored (out of the sun is best), and go for a paddle or pedal.

Are there any streams/small rivers nearby to fish? I feel a kayak really opens up those types of water.

Just bought my first fishing kayak last month and love it so far! One thing I’d recommend is try to grab one you can stand up on. I used my brothers which is designed for that and it was so much better than mine.

Kayaks are great though. If you don’t want to go fishing, you can still take it out and explore new areas. Wish I bought one sooner.

Coming from someone who fished out of a kayak and now has a boat, I vote boat. Don’t get me wrong a kayak is great, but unless you have a pedal drive, fishing can be tough once the wind starts blowing.

In a kayak, when the wind comes up, I call it a day!

You are a lot safer in a Jon boat, and you can get by with an electric trolling motor. I had a kayak and didn't enjoy the confinement and wet behind. I also almost got hit by boats due to my low profile on the water. I know kayaks have gotten better. I suggest you rent a kayak and try fishing for an entire day. It will help you make your own decision! Best of luck fishing no matter what the decision.

I had a wide Yak that you could stand up in. However, like any Yak, if you lean too far forward (sitting or standing) it is going to roll over on you. Lost a rod and reel, anchor and Costa Delmar sun glasses the last time mine did that. Got rid of it the following week. If you do decide to go with the Yak, be sure to get the kind that you can paddle with your legs; getting anywhere padding by hand is strenuous and time consuming.

Yes! I tipped over in my kayak and also lost a rod and reel/tackle box, anchor and tools! That was years ago and I learned some very valuable lessons: I learned to know my limitations and how to maneuver it better, and using leashes for my gear and floats for my rods! It’s second nature now and I haven’t dumped it since except on purpose! Oh...and always wear a life jacket! I love fishing from my kayaks!

I may add I prefer using paddles vs pedals as it’s more versatile in shallow water, rivers & streams, and beaching!
