I love my truck , but have a nagging problem with it. When I bought it, I said this would be my last truck. I use/used it to pull my boat and very sparingly when my wife needs the car at the same time. Only have 60K+ miles on it and I am quite sure my son and family have put over half of the miles on it when they come up to visit from their home in California. The problem is, a "no turn over no start". It will sometimes just click ONCE when I turn on the ignition key. i already eliminated a bracket under the dash that sometimes comes lose when a couple screws loosen which triggers the sensor that only allows the engine to start when the shifter is in the Park or Neutral position. Pretty close tolerances and a wiggle of the shifter sometimes works. The last time this happened here is a description. As I said I don't run often and am negligent in going out to start once in a while, especially during this winter time and dealing with health issues. So I went out a few weeks ago to start to make sure everything was ok because my wife was going to need the family SUV when I also need wheels to get to the Y to play Cribbage with My friend and walk my mile (which I do M_W_F). So when I tried to start, nothing, just a click, so put battery charger on each of the two Quite new batteries and got them charged up. The morning of my trip to the Y, when out and charger showed the 2nd battery was charged so took off the charger and it started just fine after the glow plug light went out and I then drove to the Y. About 3 hours later after Playing cards, visiting and walking I went out to the truck. Turned the key and CLICK! Well I was screwed, because I couldn't call AAA for a tow/start because I left my DANGED wallet at home so no phone number/drivers license/credit card. So I called home which was painful since I got a chewing out for no wallet/etc. I later found out she was in shower at the time getting ready to go out. It was not pleasant LOL. Anyway after spending time on phone, I just tried to start it again and the starter turned over and it started, no CLICK! Have any of you had similar issues?

It sounds to me like you have a relay with a bad secondary contact

Could it be the starter solenoid? They sometimes act like that.

The starter solenoid, on the front right fender will result in a click or no start. It can also be jumped with a screw driver if it gets you stranded…🐟on

Those are Dave is correct. I had a 2003 7.3 and loved it. Happened to me a couple of times. First time one of the batteries was bad replaced it and did not have a problem. The second time the solenoid under the battery you have to remove the battery lost ground. Unscrew it and remove it and wire brush where it attaches to the inner fender. Worked like a charm after that.

That’s the first thing I would check when your getting just a click or no turn over. Easy to check with bypassing it…

Kerry, I have a 2000 F350 w/7.3 and about 159000 on it. I’ve had glow plugs replaced, one of the glow plug solenoids, and the Cam Sensor a few years ago. The cam sensor actually had a recall on it, but I had trouble with it before that. It does sound like a solenoid might be giving you a problem to me. The Cold here was causing some issues last fall, and I had one battery that was worse than the other one but I replaced them both. And no issues this winter at all. Just my experience.

Go out in the dark raise hood if it has a light unscrew it or cover it. Have someone try to crank. Watch all you connections. After new battery and alternator. It done it again at the lake in the dark. Camper came to assist me. Had him try it and seen small arc on negative wire the one that runs into main negative cable at the battery. Fixed !!! 206000 miles due an alternator. 7 year old battery. It was due also. Was just glad it was fixed. Good luck

I will check out the batteries. I will also check with my multimeter to see if have a poor battery connection to see if I have a Voltage drop from battery post and clamp. I hadn't thought about one of the batteries all of a sudden losing its charge. I will check on that. Although that time at the Y, I started with fully charged batteries, driving there to replace that used to turn over the starter and glow plug and only set about 3 hours from running to not starting. i have have had cars that because of low batteries give a clatter sound and what I have read, low batteries turned the starter over, but then would not start, but in this case just a single click and no turn over is all I got? much appreciate all time you took to respond to this!

My 2000 F350 was hard to start, like bad batteries. I got it started and put a voltmeter on passenger side + battery cable -14.5 volts, passenger side + battery post -14.5 volts. Drivers side + battery cable 14.5 volts, drivers side + battery post 11.9volts. Huh?

Driver side positive cable not making good connection to battery post. Cleaned post and cable, problem solved. Cleaned other 3 cable/post connections while at it. Luckily it was an easy fix.

yep, you were dropping that voltage, 2.6 volts, across the bad connection. some time ago I cleaned the posts and clamps then after assembly sprayed them with some corrosion preventative stuff and it all looks clean with no corrosion, but I am going to check and see if I have any drop across the connections.

In reality I was reading battery voltage only on that side with no alternator influence, like it wasn't even hooked up.

When I did diesel mechanic work, had this problem before. Yes all the fixes stated above, could be the problem. If the batteries are over 3 winters old, it is more than likely replacement time. Being that you charged them up by a charger, just means nothing else is wrong, because it did start afterwards. One or both might have a 'dead' cell.

Kerry: if you have replaced the starter and both batteries checked out OK, I would take it to a trusted mechanic friend or as a last resort to the dealer ($?).

The Relay DD mentioned or Starter Solenoid first.

My 92 150 gas does this every once in awhile and I have to open hood and turn the start lead on the starter solenoid ( relay ) to get better contact then it turns and starts. I’m not sure if the power stroke has the old ford style relay.

A brand new starter can also be defective in short period of time. I do remember starter winding being bad like was mentioned. 1 broken wire in the starter windings would cause it but in any other position the starter windings have continuity.
