I love my truck , but have a nagging problem with it. When I bought it, I said this would be my last truck. I use/used it to pull my boat and very sparingly when my wife needs the car at the same time. Only have 60K+ miles on it and I am quite sure my son and family have put over half of the miles on it when they come up to visit from their home in California. The problem is, a "no turn over no start". It will sometimes just click ONCE when I turn on the ignition key. i already eliminated a bracket under the dash that sometimes comes lose when a couple screws loosen which triggers the sensor that only allows the engine to start when the shifter is in the Park or Neutral position. Pretty close tolerances and a wiggle of the shifter sometimes works. The last time this happened here is a description. As I said I don't run often and am negligent in going out to start once in a while, especially during this winter time and dealing with health issues. So I went out a few weeks ago to start to make sure everything was ok because my wife was going to need the family SUV when I also need wheels to get to the Y to play Cribbage with My friend and walk my mile (which I do M_W_F). So when I tried to start, nothing, just a click, so put battery charger on each of the two Quite new batteries and got them charged up. The morning of my trip to the Y, when out and charger showed the 2nd battery was charged so took off the charger and it started just fine after the glow plug light went out and I then drove to the Y. About 3 hours later after Playing cards, visiting and walking I went out to the truck. Turned the key and CLICK! Well I was screwed, because I couldn't call AAA for a tow/start because I left my DANGED wallet at home so no phone number/drivers license/credit card. So I called home which was painful since I got a chewing out for no wallet/etc. I later found out she was in shower at the time getting ready to go out. It was not pleasant LOL. Anyway after spending time on phone, I just tried to start it again and the starter turned over and it started, no CLICK! Have any of you had similar issues?

Had you put it back on the charger? If one battery is bad, it will drain the other battery. I just had that situation and replaced both batteries. I thought I had a dead short, until a mechanic friend had me check both batteries. They both took a full charge, but one wasn’t Holding a charge.

Could it be a bad spot it the starter or the starter wires are loose. Even the starter ground wire?

The starter solenoid, on the front right fender will result in a click or no start. It can also be jumped with a screw driver if it gets you stranded…🐟on

Kerry,
I have the same truck except the F350. The only time mine acted that way was when the second battery was bad and drawing off in a few hours so not enough amperage and it would just click like you are explaining. Changed both batteries and purrs like a kitten! They can test the batteries at local the parts store.
I have about 190,000 on mine and it has finally got over the breakin and just purrs along. Love them diesels. My ‘96 7.3 only has 120,000 on it and it is finally starting to purr along. Love that 7.3!! AND NO DEF!!!

I will check out the batteries. I will also check with my multimeter to see if have a poor battery connection to see if I have a Voltage drop from battery post and clamp. I hadn't thought about one of the batteries all of a sudden losing its charge. I will check on that. Although that time at the Y, I started with fully charged batteries, driving there to replace that used to turn over the starter and glow plug and only set about 3 hours from running to not starting. i have have had cars that because of low batteries give a clatter sound and what I have read, low batteries turned the starter over, but then would not start, but in this case just a single click and no turn over is all I got? much appreciate all time you took to respond to this!
