Lot of folks wait until they can afford to get a new one. Because like here in the golden state, it can be almost like making a mortgage payment.

I found that true in Oregon too. I could buy a non resident fishing license from Washington cheaper than my resident fishing license in Oregon for my application. Something out of whack there for sure. Where I live now I can buy all of my hunting licenses and tags as well as every fishing license I need for way less than what, just a, fishing license coast me in Oregon. AND I can fish and keep fish here too๐Ÿ‘. I bought a resident elk, bear, deer, wolf and annual fishing license here for $78.00. In Oregon itโ€™s WAY over-regulated and I was just buying a fishing license,$114.00 annually, and watching all the seasons being closed when I got a chance to go. Well outside of planter rainbows, bass and catfish there. The white mush fish not suitable for human consumption. Not mine anyway. ๐Ÿคฎ. Everything else, in Oregon, is catch and release only, limited quotas and emergency closures.

Some of us want the full value of what we pay for. If for some reason you can't get them till mid yr they should only charge half price. In any state.

Well wouldn't that be nice? Except for one HUGE problem. Those licensing fees help go towards restocking the lakes and streams in California, so if they only collected a half a year of licensing fees then you would get a lot less fish stocked, then people won't like to fish much due to the lack of fish, then more people won't buy licenses, and...well you can see the domino effect. So since you fish, and you take your share out of those lakes and streams pay your damn license for the whole year and be happy about it!

They still charge you to fish on the lakes $7-10 per person

They have never sold 1/2 year licenses and have the lowest sales of fishing licenses in years as folks do not want to pay 52.66 for a fishing license for a calendar year. If I only Salmon fish in the fall in the Sacramento River and then for trout in the spring I would have needed to purchase two licenses for 105.00 any stamps. Now you can fish in September and April with the same license which makes sense. California still does not offer any deals for seniors or veterans unless your have a veterans disability. California also has the lowest percentage of fishing license sales per capita because of their old calendar year license; perhaps this will change that.

Not in california until this year. Last year (2020) if you bought you license on December 31st, it was no good on Jan 1 2021. Didn't matter when you bought it, it expired on the 1st day of new year. So no, it ain't an old topic in this state.

Personally, I am thankful for raising this post from the dead files because I never saw the old post. I knew the 365 rule was in the works but unaware it had already gone into affect. My grandson just went on a fishing trip and bought a 3 day license because he didnโ€™t want to pay the high price of a year license with just a couple more months left in the year. No one informed him of the new law when he made the purchase.
I bought my license in may of this year. Does anyone know if the law is retroactive or am I out of luck until next year?

In California, our license was from January 1st to December 31st. So if you got your license on July 31st it still expired on December 31st.
Now it's gonna be valid for 1 year from date of purchase. So you get a full years worth of fishin whenever you purchase a license.
HOWEVER, you have to remember what day you purchased your license now to make sure you get it renewed on time.
I'll still be gettin mine on January 1st. ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘

In Texas ours expires August 31. So if I had forgotten to renew mine until July or August before the 31st, it will still expire on August 31. I always get mine renewed on September 1st. Kinda weird I think.

It should say on your license when it expires. I'd find a warden and ask one of them.

Figures California would come up with something stupid that the only sence it makes is when the game warden checks your license and you forgot more cash for the state why wouldn't they make things easy as the license starts at the begining of the year and ends on the end of the year ?Massachusetts licenses used to be color coded so wardens could see from afar if you had the right one it had to be visibley worn when you were out fishing now you only need a picture of it on your phone

Old is good. A lot of us here are OLD so OLD is cool.

My best buddy has a license plate frame on his truck that says โ€œ Old Guys Ruleโ€.

So yeah something old to one person could be NEW to someone else for sure.

I wish Oregon would go to what Golden State did. I many times donโ€™t get license until spring. I use to get it with Xmas gift certificates but now that it will be few Benjamins there isnโ€™t any gift certificates to pay for it. In Oregon Disability Military Vets get free license.

You just have to be a senior citizen in Massachusetts to get a free one that goes for saltwater also๐ŸŸ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘

You're correct but.........
.
I like to crab out of Bodega Bay but only about every other season . So I get a license in November when the season starts and then I need to get one in January. So for me to fish one season I need to purchase two licenses. If I went every year it would not make a difference, but I don't crab consecutive years mostly.

If you were reading this post you would know that california just went from the "1st of the year to end of the year" system to a yearly system - your license now expires 1 year after the day you purchase it, regardless of what day. No we didn't do that because caifornia didn't want to make sense, we did it because that's what the people wanted. Took us a while to get the process changed, but we managed it. What have you got against California Henry?
