Blow up the picture and check out the rattlers on it. About 8 of them.

Copper heads patten mimics the rattlesnake but when you compare the two. The copperheads patten is broken. Neither are fun to walk up on

The biggest (visual) difference is
the rattles (or lack therof) - the
one in the photo did have them,
so copperhead is out !

Poisonous snakes have that triangle shape heads and have vertical pupils in their eyes. Many mistake a non poisonous house copper with the poisonous cooper.

All snakes will expell a strong musk if in fear.

Just remember never to pee in a bush if it smells like sweet cucumbers. There is a cooperhead in that bush!!
Don't think about the possibility of being bitten in the woods. Nobody will want to suck the poisonous out.

If you don't report it and the authorities get wind of it from

reporting it yourself !

Well they're gonna have to find it first to be able to say I killed it. Who ME. Prove it to me that I killed a snake.

Hi Big A,
Do you have side winders out there, crazy moving snake.
Working in the desert in El Centro they would be under construction material, had to be careful picking up things.
Also lots of scorpions.
When we lived in the mountains I found scorpions in the house.

Looks to me like an Eastern Diamondback, but a relatively small one, as they are generally the largest of the rattlers in this country ! Since
I can't see the head, it's hard to distinguish one from the other !

Oops ! Just zoomed in for a second look and found the rattles, so it IS
a diamondback !

ashamed of you Big

Most Timber rattlers I've seen were dark and crusty but I've seen some light colored. I assumed it had something to do with their environment

Poisonous snake in North America
are predominantly from the 'pit viper' family (with the exception of coral
snakes) and will have the distinctive, 'tell-tale' triangular-shaped head !

Glad to know about the scent, which
is a sort of second warning system, as some vipers (like copperheads
and cottonmouths) don't have rattles !
