A young Marine recruit finds
himself in the Southeast Asian
jungles shortly after being
drafted in '69 ! His sergeant
informs him that there will be
'Jungle Indoctrination' classes
before anyone new is sent out -
the next morning after chow, he hustles his butt over to the
classroom for the lecture !
The sergeant starts telling the
class about the dangers to be
wary of in the jungle, the most
dangerous of which is the
'five-step' snake, a highly
poisonous Southeast Asian
pit viper ! He informs them
of which medical procedures
to follow if bitten, including
making an incision and sucking
the poison out ! At that point, the young man raises his hand and
asks his sergeant -
"Hey, Sarge ! What if you're squatting for a dump and get bit in the butt ?"
"Well now, son, that's when you'll
find out who your REAL friends
are !"

Poisonous snake in North America
are predominantly from the 'pit viper' family (with the exception of coral
snakes) and will have the distinctive, 'tell-tale' triangular-shaped head !
Glad to know about the scent, which
is a sort of second warning system, as some vipers (like copperheads
and cottonmouths) don't have rattles !
Can we all agree it is a snake and it is poisonous? Only the taker of the pic knows for sure.

These are only common on your side of the hill right Griz? I doubt it.
I doubt it PLUM i know the copperheads in particular are prevalent a large area. Rattlesnake aren't that scarce either. When we put utilities in for campground at Cunningham falls park in Fredrick co we found plenty of coppers n a couple rattlesnake. The loggers that cleared in front of us found many more than we did. Roads dept. In Washington co found many coppers n non poisonous snakes.

Griz, i left the Carolina snakes behind and don't care to come across another ever again. Had pigmy's, rattlesnakes, copperheads, water moccasins, and the brown recluse spider that took out the wife. Twice i might add.
Going outside always walked with head down. Oh did i mention fire ants?

I know about Carolina snakes Plum. When i was at camp Lejeune a guy ran over a rattlesnake that was over 6'. Myself n a couple dumbass would go into the swamp ground. Saw some weird stuff in there. Came back after one excursion with ticks in bad places. ππ

Related story; same sergeant -
different recruit !
Sarge is giving the orientation/
indoctrination class when he
notices a new, young recruit at
the back of the class paying rapt attention to every word and syllable !
He sees the same kid three days
later and he's a mess ! Cut and bleeding everywhere and his clothes are torn to shreds - looks like he had the whole war fought on top of him !
"Say, son, didn't I see you in class
just a few days ago ? What
happened to you ?"
"Well, sarge, you remember how
you told us about that 'five-step
snake' and how to identify and
kill it ? You said to look for
alternating black and orange bands, grab the tail and run your fingers
up its' body in a loop and break
its' neck ?"
"Yeah ! And I noticed you paying attention, too ! So how is that
relevant to your current
condition ?"
"Sarge - have you ever
goosed a tiger ?"
