Got this at a yard sale earlier today. Can anyone tell me about it?
They also made a 308 along with a 309. Same configuration except one is left hand and the other is right handed. I use them on my light an ultra light rods.
I see them at yard sales unfortunately I would need the 301. I still have one about 40 years old but don’t use much cause I became spoiled by lighter smoother skirted spool models. None of those will last as long as a 300 though.
Mine was mounted on a VINTAGE FENWICK PLS65 SPINNING ROD FERALITE. Can’t count the number of trout I landed with that rig.

I bought a couple of the 400’s which was identical to the 300 but was a higher speed retrieve. Had them for many years.

I was told it is pretty much the father of all quality reels.
Also what kind of rod should I pair it up with? It doesn’t fit the one I wanted to put it on as well as I thought it would.

I bought one in Gibralter in 1959. My father wore it out.
Mitchell 300 I was 12 years old when I got mine and I'm now 68 it was my first spinning reel but didn't get to try it out for a year after I got it at the time my dad was stationed in Germany and the family was there with him, I spoiled it up with 10 pound test on a 6' 5" rod, had some good times catching fish once we got back to Minnesota, buy the one thing I remember about that reel was how loud it was the clicking as you wound it I, a good beginner reel. Baitchucker
I used this as a kid in the 60's for saltwater & freshwater. I liked it so much I bought the new Mitchell 300 pro which I catch bass on. Should last a lifetime if you keep it up.

Funny you should ask. I just restored my Garcia Mitchell 300 that I got, I believe, in 1956. Works as well today as it did then. I set it up with a lightweight I bought at L.L. Bean in Raceway Mall. I can't tell you the nostalgia I feel when I cast it out. Enjoy it. It's a great reel.

This is probably the best all round fishing reel ever made, it’s originally made in France, , I have had these reels for years, and I really love them, you can use them for all kinds of fishing. If you look on eBay, you can sometimes get the extra spools for a good price, I got 12 of them last year for $16. All of them are in the original metal storage tins, marked France, five have never been used, still had the original paper tags on the spools. Anyway, you’re going to love the way that they work, just as smooth as can be. Enjoy your time fishing with your Garcia Mitchell 300’s they have no equal, they are still the best open faced spinning reels ever. I personally own 7, four I bought myself, and three that I got from my Dad, he also loved them. And they all are in perfect working order and get used all the time, they’ll work out well on any rod that you might like to use. If they were still making them, I think that the company would still be making lots of money on them.
Bought some of these 300's in late 50s in the Navy Exchange in Yokosuka, Japan.
Its a garcia mitchell 300 or 301 top of the line in its day couldnt wait to get one when i wa zzz's a kid 50 years ago
one of the best reels I have ever owned.
That is the spinning real to fish with many years ago. I do not know if I found one that I would fish it. Many of the older fisher persons got one for Christmas or birthday and was a very big deal.
I have a 300 and 308 which have been sitting in the basement for the last 20 years plus. These posts want me to pull them out give them a good cleaning and set them up on appropriate rods and do some classic old school fishing this fall.
It looks like a Mitchell 300 very good reels I put it on at least a 7 foot medium
