I was told it is pretty much the father of all quality reels.

Also what kind of rod should I pair it up with? It doesn’t fit the one I wanted to put it on as well as I thought it would.

Mitchell 300 great reel you are right about being the grandfather of modern spinning reels I have three left of the five my father gave me been using them for the past 45 years and still kicking for the rod a Shakespeare 7 foot medium or light action will be good the seat for the reel should be wide enough. Good Luck happy fishing

The first reel I ever bought back in 1963. I gave it to my old man when I went in the Navy in '69. He passed it on to one of my nephews. A workhorse and as has been stated before, easy to maintain. Take it out and fish with it.

Does anybody remember the Royal Bonyl line. It was tough as nails but if you got a tangle you were done. My pet peeve with non skirted reels 301/309 was lite line sometimes got under the spool and made a mess. Having said that on occasion I will pull the 301 out on occasion and take it fishing and someone earlier pointed out the only flaw was the bail spring. I seriously couldn’t imagine how many fish fell to that reel with probably more than 5 or 6 various rood combinations. Nowadays everything l buy comes from China some good some bad but none will ever compete with my old Penns Mitchell’s or ambassadors.

I grew up using mitchels - always thought they were the best. 5 years ago bought a penn spin fisher - $200 for reel/ graphite rod combo. It was eye opening. Conclusion - modern gear is superior - hands down. Plus - you can’t use braid on the old mitchels - it will cut groves in the bail. Now, my old mitchels (4 of them) just waist away in storage.

Love the 308s. In the mid 60s in Alaska, it was the only reel I used. They were not made for heavy fish so when I burned the gears out of it horsing big Kings I bought another one. Many years, many miles and many fish later when it gave up I found 2 of them for $15 in a discount and closeout store in Minnesota. The discount store reels were not in the best of shape and both were repaired with mail order parts. I've given up on them now but if I found one in working condition at a garage sale I snap it up in a heartbeat.

Yeah, the infamous Mitchell 300! My first reel bought back in 1975! Used it on various rods. I bought spare spools and filled them with quality lines ranging in weights from 4lbs to 10lbs. Mounted the reel on various rods as I learned more about fishing for bass, trout and various sunfish. I took the best of care with that work horse over the decades. Had to replace a few parts along the way. I finally retired it two years ago(2017)and bought a 308. The build quality of the newer ones is not as good as the reels produced from the 50’s through the early 2000’s. But still good reels. You can’t go wrong with these! If you find more and have a reliable source for parts, by all means, buy them! Tight lines and support Catch and Release for future fisherman.
