Hi all, I'm not much of a fisherman myself but my son has fallen in love with fly fishing so... :)

We're heading up to the Bear River (near Wheatland) because he read the fishing was great but does anyone happen to know of any specific spots? He'd love suggestions for flies as well.

Thank you!

I have not fished there in years, but I used to all the time. Drive up 65 and right before you get to Wheatland there's a pull-off where you can park. Just over the bridge. If you're quiet you may see otters playing under and around the bridge. To the east is all posted, or used to be. Go across the
hi-way and if you walk west, that used to be a huge walnut grove. I used to walk the river, sometimes as much as a mile or so west. Never got permission, but I never had anybody challenge me either. Lots of spots and and smallies, bluegill and catfish (which you're not gonna get on a fly probably).
Salmon in the fall but limit is 0. Same for trout. 0. I never hooked a trout there, nor a salmon - but I saw the salmon in the fall. The water is pretty shallow there and when it's full of salmon it can be pretty spectacular. It's a beautiful place and worth going just to listen to the flow of the river if nothing else.

The best place that I know of with truly public access to the river is Bear River Park outside of Colfax. Not nearly as good fishing, but for sure you can fish it. You're taking your chances in Wheatland and anywhere around there - all farm land and all private.

What rivers are near San Diego besides the San Diego River? Within an hour or two driving. Thanks

The closest real river is the Colorado over on on the Arizona border, just take 8 over to Yuma.

Just got back from camping with my two boys. Was a great time truly am blessed my boy like the outdoor. We drove to hernandez reservoir to see if we could find a trail to it and fish. No luck though the reservoir is on private land and lots of signs stating so. The reservoir was so low you could only see a puddle from the distance. Did get info for the land owners for future trips

Hey wanna be fisherman: Did you get any replies to your entry. Don't worry about 50 yrs green because everyone was green at one point. Not sure what you're looking for here but is it someone to take you fishing. If so.Spent yrs operating charter boats and guide boats but now retired and will gladly take anyone fishing now just for company.

Looked for wanna be's post, couldn't find it. Where's he at? Where do you fish around Penn Valley? I used to fish the south Yuba up at the state park - walk the trail back in there. Haven't bee up there in a couple of years. Ever go there? I also fish Collins a lot. Maybe we should get together?

Shad darts Steve. Used to fish off the stern of my buddy Bill's bass boat on the Feather with my 3wt fly rod. Don't even need to cast, just let the current take your line. 2 or 3 pound shad in current on a 3wt? Or you can stand on the bank and throw one cross-current and drag it back. You and 20000 other people.

Switched from a shad dart to those little crappie grubs on a 1/8 or 1/4 oz jighead. Change grub colors (I use red, white, chart, and pink) till you find the color of the day.

I've been fishing lake Silverwood off the dock three days in a row with no luck. I've seen some very nice bass chasing my swimbait but they refuse to bite.
