Shad darts Steve. Used to fish off the stern of my buddy Bill's bass boat on the Feather with my 3wt fly rod. Don't even need to cast, just let the current take your line. 2 or 3 pound shad in current on a 3wt? Or you can stand on the bank and throw one cross-current and drag it back. You and 20000 other people.

That's what I thought they used. You know, something like that anyway.
Sounds like they're in the river over there now. Go get some.

It can be pretty awful when the word gets out that they're running. Where Bill and I used to go is a little more remote and we never encountered crowds like that. That's pretty much right in the middle of the city.

Are they even good to eat?
I never thought they were especially. Like carp. I don't want to eat one even though some people do.

They're really good. They're a lot like herring. But a real pain in the butt to clean. Had a Vietnamese buddy whose mom fixed em somehow in a pressure cooker so you could eat bones and all. They were delicious. I understand that about 30 years or so ago DFW published a paper on how to clean em - it was 7 pages long.

wondering what water conditions are like on hat creek, and what you think water level might be this fall because of the drought conditions ???

No clue what the fall will bring. Does the creek rely on snow melt or is it primarily spring fed? I got no idea. Let's ask the old farmers?

Then I would think that the fall flows should be right around whatever they normally are. Agree?

Deboning them is the problem. Shad have a massive bone structure and it takes a considerable amount of skill to debone them, a skill I was not able to muster after bringing home about 20 after fishing on the Sacramento River near Redding. I know there are recipes that say to cook them a long time at high temperature which tends to dissolve the bones but I can't imagine the eating will be anything interesting with that kind or preparation.
There is a Youtube out there about cleaning shad but I think it takes a surgeon's practice and delicacy to do it right.

Andy do they tent fishing boats there ? Our Shasta trip was a disaster , we didn’t get any fishing time in due to circumstances that are way too boring to discuss sooooooo we are looking for a lake closer to us here in the Bay Area . We love the Sutter creek !

I spent about two hours sitting in that little aluminum fishing boat alone cuz nobody in our party wanted to get on that Rinky dink boat. Pathetic excise of fishermen I ever did see ! Lol.. I got one good bite which is more than I’ve gotten in years . Moral of the story ..... being out on a lake in a little fishing boat alone relaxing to the lapping water against the boat , listening to bald eagles , geese , duck etc not catching a fish is ummmmm is like heaven on earth ! Didn’t catch anything but I sure did enjoy tryin !
