I live on the east coast and if you go on any kind of charter the captain's license covers the guests.

I fish a reservoir system (Newark Watershed) that you need a permit and your license to fish. we fished these reservoirs 16 times this year and never saw a Ranger or anyone from the watershed. We always purchase a license and the permits, sometimes you want to be checked because we know there is an illegal fisherman there.

You're right that California is one of the most expensive places to live. Licenses on licenses. But at least the fishing is good, right?

Read the earlier post on people who stock up on fish after being checked. They think they will not be checked again, AKA poachers who are stealing from us honest sportsmen. Do you really expect the warden to remember several hundred people a day they check? If you really feel that paranoid and angry about fish cops, being That it is Christmas. I will refrain from what I really think and in the spirit of Christmas just suggest you find a sport that is not so stressful to you.

Thanks but don’t need your suggestions. I fish for a living and it don’t stress me out at all. I just prepare for the areas and don’t worry about it. They can’t touch me because I’m never in violation. Lots of guys I fish with have the same issues. It’s a problem because of where we fish and we’re there a lot. Not because we’re doing anything wrong. Paranoid couldn’t be further from what I am about crooked cops. I simply have backup and can shut them down pretty easy. They can threaten me with a citation for telling them they’re bugging me but, so far, we still have freedom of speech and they are not exempt from hearing what we have to say in response to their actions. Kinda fun actually when a macho badge thinks they’re the boss and they’re 40 years younger than me and I simply read them the law and tell them to go find someone else to bother. Many are good ones but several are not. I pay them, they don’t pay me so I explain that part.

In South East Alaska, everyone has to have there own license including the captain and deck hands, but the captain checks them as the captain also gets cited if he has a client fishing without a license. For Halibut, the captain also has a log with each halibut caught by client including name, address and license number of the client. The captain is also supposed to log rock fish, Ling cod and salmon by species. On top of that, the captain and deck hands can not fish. Now that is revenue collecting, but by the government who makes the law, not the wardens who have to enforce the laws. I can not speak for the rest of the country, but in Alaska, working a charter boat is not a hobby. It is a job. Back to the license thing: I was usually stopped several times a season even though after years, I knew the local State Trooper/warden. I have even had wardens from out of the area book trips undercover. I just wish they had more time to make repeated stops as that is the only way to weed out unscrupulous guides. NOTE: I have never been cited or even warned. I have also never failed a surprise drug test. That being said, My clients usually limited out and did it legally. They also had a blast along with taking at least some new fishing knowledge with them.

I usually get checked 3-4 times a year on my home lake. Fishing out of state I nearly always get checked. This year I was checked once. Sometimes i may go 1or 2 years and not get checked. They always check for legal equipment, and license. If in a tight situation they will ask you to hold items up so they can see them. Never a problem. On a 4 day trip to N.C. was checked every day by the same warden. The last day at the ramp he was there, never looked at us. I got his attention and told him we were leaving, are you going to check us again today. He threatened to write me a ticket. I simply laughed at him. Two years later he was arrested for sexual assault on a teenager. Never saw him again. Keep fishing. DEEJAY

I could not go fishing on the Canadian side of the border because of the covid-19 virus this year. Fished for muskie angle inlet Minnesota side caught a 48 1/2 " and released it and my cousin caught a 49" muskie 3 miles away from my house in central Minnesota.

There is always bad apples in every group. To bad you caught a lemon. There is little worse in the world than a dirty cop, with an abusive cop running a close second. Fortunately bad cops are far far less prevalent than the press and a lot of abusive people try to make out. I sure hope you had better luck with the rod and reel.
