Some places are hassle free for sure. It’s that way here in Idaho. I had a game cop stop by when I was bank fishing for steelhead. He visited for a while and asked if I had been getting any bites. As he was leaving I asked “aren’t you gonna check my license?”. He just said “why?” Then he said “we have bigger issues to worry about than people fishing without a license. We don’t rely on extra revenue from citations. We work for you, you don’t work for us. Have a great day and good luck”. And he left.

Been fishing 25 years in Idaho...been checked 3 times. The officers have, in every case, been courteous and professional. Nice guys, really. But then, I've never been doing anything I could be cited for. 😇

I’ve never been checked in my life but have seen guys checked a couple times. I always get my freshwater licenses for wherever I’m fishing. We have a saltwater angler registration in NJ which is free for residents and works in other states it’s done annually online very quickly and easily becomes effective immediately. I believe in bag limits and size limits and the need for them and it pisses me off when people don’t abide . Not talking about one fish 1/4 inch short . I mean 12 fish not even close. So I’ll pay the price of licenses to support the science and the ones who keep it all in check.

Was checked for license twice
this year - both times at Community lakes/ponds ! First time was at Chaparral Lake in Scottsdale about four months
ago, the second at Greenfield
Park in Mesa about two weeks
ago ! No problem with either
one !

Back in N.H. in May of '05 (my best season, ever !), I was fishing one of my favorite runs (riffles/ rapids/pools), when I was
stopped by the same idiot three times in two weeks ! I asked him whether he didn't recognize
people or their vehicles after the first, or after (especially) the second time he checked their license ! I also pointed out that
my car was a rather distinctive color (brown as a turd - referred
to it as the rolling sh*t-box) and that alone should have been
worth noticing ! After the third time, I told him that I felt 'singled out' and that if I was bothered by him again that I would file a
complaint for harassment and/
or discrimination ! Saw him twice more in the next six weeks, but
was not bothered again ! Found out months later that he was a buddy of the jerk my 'ex' married after our divorce ! It really WAS harassment !

Been checked once in 70years. Don’t need one now. Alabama has lifetime at 65. All you need is your drivers license.

Well, I'm almost 75 years old, been fly fishing since I was 12 -- I've never had a warden check me for a license. I've had conversations with many of them while fishing in Wisconsin, Virginia, California, Wyoming, Alaska, and here at home in Montana. I guess they figure that I "must have" a license or I wouldn't be shoot'in the breeze with them in such a relaxed manner. No matter, I believe it's a privilege to buy a license, and support the activity I love so much. Tight Lines to you all.

I was just wondering how many fishermen get checked for licenses? I stay legal and have a license in Michigan Wisconsin Minnesota Montana Yukon territory Alaska in one year and only was asked for it in my home state of Minnesota and fly fishing in Montana. Never saw a warden anywhere else.

Here in California I would get checked 2-3 times a year. On a charter boat in California if a customer is fishing without a license the customer and the Captain both are cited. This law always pissed me off because it made me an unpaid game warden. So I would have to check for licenses before we left the dock. Got in more than one argument with customers who felt they should not need a license. I even had one fellow tell me he was an Eskimo and as a native American he did not have to buy a license. I explained how I would be cited if he did not have a license and I was not going to risk that based on his say so.

S.F. bay has a big Coast Guard presence. When they have checked me it is always for safety related issues, or to verify my Captains license, but not fishing licenses. F&G checks licenses, catch size etc. but I have never been checked for safety items by a warden. I did have a warden tell me I was in violation of a coast guard paperwork regulation. He quoted a regulation code and gave me a "warning". To be sure of being in compliance I checked with the Coast Guard and found out there was no such regulation. I would say when the Feds are explaining state regs, or the wardens explaining Federal regs. check it out for yourself.

Sometimes. Some places are revenue influenced. I mean the same guy checking the same person twice in the same day? “COME ON MAN!!!”. What? Do they think you sold your license to somebody or something? Maybe you dropped it in the river so now they can write you a citation? I’ve never been busted for a game or fish violation of any kind but I’ve come real close to getting in trouble for “assaulting an officer of the law”. That’s what they call it if you remind them they already checked you once today. That or “interfering with the duties of a police officer”. I just don’t play their games and they don’t like that at all. Most times they’ll stay back in the distance until you spend the 20/30 minutes it takes to lure fish in then come rushing up to you boat and demand you pull all of your gear out of the water so they can check it. That’s uncalled for if you’re not, obviously violating any laws. Especially with guys like me who’ve been check tons of times and have never been cited for any wrong doing.

Read the earlier post on people who stock up on fish after being checked. They think they will not be checked again, AKA poachers who are stealing from us honest sportsmen. Do you really expect the warden to remember several hundred people a day they check? If you really feel that paranoid and angry about fish cops, being That it is Christmas. I will refrain from what I really think and in the spirit of Christmas just suggest you find a sport that is not so stressful to you.
