Hey Jwid, I thought you would have bigger panfish like Pumpkinseed out in the Midwest. We have some here, but our record is 1lb 3oz set in '73. We have 2guys tied on the C&R record @ 10inches, caught 4 and 5 years ago.

You would think. Long ear sunfish (punkinseed) New mo state record is 4oz. Our Bluegill record is only 3lbs.
Our bass records are more impressive and they keep the panfish in check. Almost 14lbs LMB and 39lbs striped bass. Catfish 130lbs eating something besides jello hotdogs.

We have some similar Bluegill 2lb 4oz, LMB 12lb 14oz (1961) , we only have Channel Cats 29lb 6oz, and White Cats 12lb 12oz, and of course our Stripers are all saltwater 81lb 15oz (world record till this summer).
The old records like LMB will probably never be broken, 'cause there's a lot more fishing pressure, and tournament fishing than ever before. Maybe though, there's a farm pond somewhere in the state where a monster lives. Most of them don't let anyone fish there.

1. Yellow Perch
2. Walleye
3. Bluegill, Catfish, Crappie
4. Smelt, Trout

Pan fried is good. Try mixing Frosted Flakes or Cheez-it Crackers with breading.

Try boiled Bluegill. Then chill and serve with cocktail sauce. Tastes like shrimp and the ladies appreciate not smelling up the house.

Cold water Smelt or Trout is also a number one pick.

Large Mouth Bass are NOT illegal to catch & eat in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts... They must be at least 7lbs. in weight... Some of the best LMB I've ever eaten, had come out of a mill-pond, in Middlesex County. Most enjoyable meals of freshwater fish for me, have been the mixed Fish-Fries we'd had, when I was in High School, in the early to mid 1970's, in MA. Bass, Bluegills, Sunfish.

True but only part of their life. They start and end in fresh water.

Able,Largemouth in Massachusetts only have to be 12inches long to keep/eat, 5fish per day. Same as Connecticut. I don't know where you heard 7lbs?

Yeah, it really "blew me outta the water"; when I read that... It was on one or another "official" website... Lemme see, if I can find it again.

Yah, Fred... I seem to have been looking at an area of: (www.) mass.gov; where they have: "Catch And Keep Rules and Minimum Weights" ... But; right there too; is something about: "Mass Wildlife's Freshwater Sportfishing Awards Program" complete rules for the catch and keep category... I'm not really sure, WHAT information they are trying to CONVEY, right there... Maybe to get some sort of an award?

Yeah Able, we have something similar called "Trophy Fish Award ". If you catch a fish over certain size, you can get a certificate and a pin celebrating your catch. There are different weights/ lengths for every type of fish. Our LMB minimum is 6lbs/ 22in. There's a whole affidavit that needs to be filled out, witnessed and submitted to the state. In the case of C&R a couple photos with a measuring device must be sent with the form. That's probably where you saw that weight.

Well, thanks for the "validation" (of sorts), on that answer of mine... It's been since 1975 or 6; since I've caught a bass, in Mass.. Most of those that I HAD caught, were out of a private pond, and so; we were just as likely to "eyeball'em", as we were to pull out the measuring tape. (If it didn't look like the filet would fairly well stretch across the frying pan; we pretty much just tossed'em back.

Bluegill are good, but nowhere near as good as crappie. It’s gonna matter where you fish as well, I don’t get many opportunities to catch trout or salmon. But you can buy those, can’t buy crappie.
