Yep ! That's definitely a yellow perch ! Used to catch hundreds
of 'em (and 'sunnies') as a kid ! Very tasty ! The jumble is porgy, though I'm not sure what that is; never caught one that I'm aware
of ! Saltwater species ?

Funny thing about regional fish names. Fished up in New Hampshire and they called porgy scup. Up in Canada they call walleye pickerel. The list goes on and on, guess that’s the reason taxonomists adopted binomial nomenclature

I must have lived a relatively sheltered life; I grew up in N.H., lived and fished there for just
over 50 years, and never heard
of scup, either !

I've heard that they (used to, at least) use "purse-seines" to catch those "Pogy", in northern Florida... In the Gulf... So, saltwater species, yes; Big A. The yellow perch, as far as I can recall; my ¡1 & only! (If you can believe THAT; with MY address) was caught when I was about 10 years old... Over 50 years ago, east of Fairport Harbor.

Ring perch here in VA - especially for the old-timers, many of whom call crappies silvers or silver perch.

It is a yellow perch. I’m from Wisconsin and this is one of the fish we about lived on when I was a kid 70 years ago. One of the best eating fish ever, pan fried or deep fried. After all these years I still look forward to a meal of yellow perch. The nice thing about perch is that they readily bite in summer or through the ice. They are a first cousin to the walleye and sauger.

Looks like a jumbo yellow perch. Extra stripe and a big hump on its back. Great eating. I put the fillets in tin foil with garlic, butter and lemon pepper. Cook em on the grill and crumble em up for fish tacos. They’re also pretty tasty marinated in sweet red chili sauce, butter and macadamia nuts and cooked on the grill too.

A popular and a porky are two different fish. A popular is a small menhaden, which is an excellent bait . Porgy, or soup, are a decent eating fish.

I'd never known how to spell the name of them fish, 'til lately... All the people I've ever HEARD "discussing them" always pronounced it: "pOHggy"... So, I don't know if that's a regional "thang", er what.

Wv Mike has started it again - we call it ‘this’ but you call it ‘that’ but here its a ‘this’ and up there it a ‘that’. I really enjoy hearing all the different names for the same fish.

Attached is a picture of a perch (top) fresh water fish and a scup or porgy, a salt water fish. They are not to scale.

Yellow Perch is a first cousin of the Walleye. Both are some of the best fresh water eating you will ever find.
We roll the fillet in egg, then in flour. A little salt and pepper and you are ready for the frying pan.
Have had tremendous success this year with night crawlers especially during the summer. Might be time for minnows this time of year. Bottom feeders. Keep your bait close to the bottom.

Any small lure (with a half inch night crawler) can be used casting. 15 is the limit in South Dakota. Takes about that many for a good meal.
