He’ll be fine. Gulf coast fishing guides are some tough cookies. My sister lives in Lake Jackson, opposite side of Houston from you, is fine, no problems. That wasn’t the case during Harvey where she lost power for a few days and had water in her yard. The most we’ve ever been without power at our place in Fourchon was 14 days, hurricane Rita. The wind field and storm surge on the East side of the storms cause the most damage. Portable generators and a portable a/c window unit are a must. Had roof damage, damaged siding, busted windows and flooded the downstairs storage area on multiple occasions since 1988. Wouldn’t trade it for just about anything.

Thank you much, guys for all of the excellent advice that you have given me, it is deeply appreciated. I liked Big Dog's goat advice and then Wulffy had to expound on it, great thinking guys. A week ago, we were selling this place. The neighbor wanted to buy it and they were going to make a B & B out of it. Another buddy wanted to buy it, they had bought some land and they were going to build on it, but they would rather have our place. Many calls from people who had heard we were thinking about selling. News travels fast in a small town. What it amounts to is that we have shot our wad the last 16 years and now we are going to enjoy it. We will have to hire some help in a few years but so what, it will work. Thanks again guys.

There's a guy here on the Fishing Stage, I think he's from somewhere in Minnesota, anyway as he often says, "We care, we share!" 🙏😃

In 2004 we built a house for our retirement, everything is handicapped accessible, 3200 sq. ft., on 3 acres in the woods, 2 miles from town on a township road, with one neighbor who watches the house when we go South for the Winter. We have a large deck in the back to watch the birds on, a front porch, a large agregate patio coming out from our party room. The patio over looks two ponds that cascade over a water fall into a bigger pond. (Only goldfish in the pond.) A triple garage, and a 30 x 30 shed to keep the toys in. We have Geo-thermal heat and all floors are heated. It cost very little to heat or cool. Flowers & and shrubs all over the place with many 16 y/o trees, a raised garden, a ground garden, rashberry bushes, blackberry bushes and a couple of apple trees. We are getting older, and needless to say, this place is a lot of work to take care of. I work 2 days a week for the DNR, last year, the other 5 days are spent weeding, mowing, trimming and general maintenace. I call it my physical fitness program. I can still do it, but 5 years from now, IDK, as we are 77 y/o. A condo isn't the answer, I have too many toys that I like to use, same as a lot in town, I would need 4 lots and build new to have everything that I wanted. We don't want to start new with everything, we hve what we want right now.

We could sell this place in a heart beat, like the other two that we built, but what do we replace it with?
I'm sure some of you people have been in the same situation. What did you do and was it the right decision? Help me out, this is a tough decission to make. Your input will be appreciated.

this won't help you much we retired and sold the farm 6 years ago along with the house we built didn't move to the city live in a village of 100 people bought a 2500 sq. ft. house with a 24 x 26 garage and a 14 x 30 garage on a 172 x 124 lot filled the 14 x 30 with woodworking tools still needed more room so bought 3 more lots and built a 30 x 36 steel garage/shop for the rest of the stuff. I guess what I'm saying when you retire or and want to down size do a better job than I did. i'm thinking the thing to do is sell toys and tools and other place and retire again small garden mow the grass take care of the honey dos and go fishing more.

Flyguy there is one other thing I neglected to say, if the two of you are really stumped as to what to do, join together and PRAY ABOUT IT. What is best for you will reveal itself to you. God is good like that!!!

Hi Flyguy. I’m in a similar situation but not as far along as you. I’ve lived and worked in cities most of my life and can no longer live in one for many of the reasons already stated. I worked for the U.S. Geological Survey for over 17 years in Alaska and the Arctic and I was always reluctant to return to the city except to see relatives, friends, and to get to work on our new field data and collections. I vowed to myself to retire to a place in the country where I could enjoy the rest of my life. I am now retired and live in a small mountain community about 16 miles from town where I can re-supply and obtain all of the services I need. I always have chores to due similar to your case but I still take time off for fishing and other fun activities. I have some very nice neighbors who have helped me with some of my projects and I have returned the favors to them. I do not want to live in town again! As some of the others have mentioned, hire some part time help for some of your work and if you have some neighbors, friends, and family that can help this would relieve your burden and you can stay in your country dream home.
By the way, what was your reward for? You look awful proud of it!

Have you thought about a rental unit for the toys and extras and then a condo. That would free up those 5 days but what would you do for exercise? Mike

Stay where you are, hire a gardener they are younger and probably will take them half as long as you are working now, you can still do part of the more desirable, enjoyable tasks. There is always a way around any obstacle if you look for it. Enjoy the things that you like as long as you can. DEEJAY.

One morning I was mowing the yard and the neighbors dog, a big Pit Bull, Kept charging the fence barking and it really concerned me I really thought the dog would come thru the fence..

Did you ever Consider feeding the pit bull some tasty treats laced with ExLax?
That would have kept the dog AND the woman busy while you mowed in peace!
Just a thought 😇😇😇

I couldn't intentionally hurt someone else dog, even if that someone isn't so nice. It's not the dogs fault the owner don't teach it manners. Things worked out for the best, I moved out of town and back to somewhere others can't bother me.

I see a cabin with a barn/shop on a river/stream/lake with some toys and a garden. But that's just me.
