Those foul balls always seem to find the umpire too. We wear all kinds of protective gear and every so often during my 100 game season (spring through fall) I get hit directly where the gear ain’t.

This particular photo is my upper arm hit twice during a softball 🥎 tournament weekend. Nothing soft about a 🥎.

We played Spring ball in HS. Taking infield practice in the gym on the basketball court as there was still snow on the ground outside. Talk about developing hand-eye coordination as balls with raised seams take funny bounces off hardwood floors from being hit by a fungo bat. Then perhaps a few outside practices before our Opening Day. We had a few games every year with snow flurries flying and temps in the low 30s…
The sting of an inside fastball off a wood bat in 35 degree weather still brings back bad memories 😅
Yes, it is Spring…play ball!

Coached for many years. One of the few benefits still left living in California !

Unfortunately not.
I even volunteer for the abuse during summer LL tournaments, I know that I signed up for the risk of a physical injury but all of the verbal abuse makes me wonder what’s wrong with some of the spectators…

I went to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York with my girlfriend who is now my wife of 40 years and a buddy of mine and his girlfriend, (who is not his wife today) and wound up watching Abbott and Costello, Who’s on First in one of the rooms there and I was so hysterically laughing that the three of them got up and left me because they were so embarrassed!! And to this day I still laugh uncontrollably at that performance! Good clean humor!!

Also visited the baseball hall of fame last year. Crossed off one of my bucket lists. Truly enjoyed the Abbot and Costello Video. So many memories of the great game.!

I did some umpiring for LL and Babe Ruth Leagues. 99% of the problems came from parents, not players. People who thought they knew the game and the rules.

So true my friend. The major reason why I gave up! Dealing with the parents and the schools athletics departments no longer made it enjoyable! Parents would pay for league fees and uniform upgrades and the school would devert to money to other programs!
