It was simple enough. I caught an 11 pound blue on a 16 inch live bunker. I slid my hand down the steel leader and it flipped up and bit me. Took the tip off to the nail. Wasn't a lot of skin, but it sure was a reminder. BTW the fish was worth a couple hundred in the tournament. πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

So it was a good fish, even though it was a bad one. 😎

My brother and I got out for some fishing at Lake Jacksonville. Pretty brisk in the mornings at 54Β°, but we got to enjoy 75+Β° later on.
Bro caught a decent bass (2 plus pounds was our guess] on a Berkeley El Choppo (similar to the Whopper Plopper). He lipped it, but the naughty boy shook loose from him, but not entirely. Imagine the bass on one hook and your thumb on the other.
I quickly moved up to him, grabbed the bass and gingerly unhooked the bass and released it.

Luckily, we always carry diagonal cutters in the boat. Clipped off the Barb, pulled out the hook, bandaged him up, and we continued to fish. Yeah, he had to replace the hook later at home.πŸ€”

I carry band aids and antiseptic wipes in my bag all the time. Consider doing so yourselves.
Also consider keeping diagonal cutters handy. They might just save your day.

Thanks Gordon. Yup, we have dealt with this in the past. Never pleasant, but part of life for fishing.

Ouch! πŸ€• Good thing you had the cutters and FA kit! Did the same thing to my ear a couple years ago.

Also have to watch out for your dog. Twice as a kid fishing on the bank and baiting up had my dog run by and got tangled in my fishing line and drove the hook into my hand. Never left the dog at home just more careful after
the second time

That happened to me once. Like you we cut the the hook and pushed it on thru. First aide cream a band aide and back to fishing. Tool box and first aide kit don't leave home without them

Yup. A solid plan to handle possible mishaps.

Been there, done that Jer. At least the fish was successfully released. I carry a pair of side cutters for just such an occasion. The Arthur in my thumbs makes lippin bigger fish risky for me and the fish. I don't like dropping and bruising them, so I use a net, lip gripper, and a wet rag if needed, to handle them. The added bonus is less chances of being impaled.

Fred, what type gripper (brand) do you have? Got hooked trying to take bass off a crankbait last month on lake Hartwell. Not very bad but enough to consider buying one. I've lost a lot of grip in my hands and fingers over the years. Thanks.
