My brother and I got out for some fishing at Lake Jacksonville. Pretty brisk in the mornings at 54Β°, but we got to enjoy 75+Β° later on.
Bro caught a decent bass (2 plus pounds was our guess] on a Berkeley El Choppo (similar to the Whopper Plopper). He lipped it, but the naughty boy shook loose from him, but not entirely. Imagine the bass on one hook and your thumb on the other.
I quickly moved up to him, grabbed the bass and gingerly unhooked the bass and released it.

Luckily, we always carry diagonal cutters in the boat. Clipped off the Barb, pulled out the hook, bandaged him up, and we continued to fish. Yeah, he had to replace the hook later at home.πŸ€”

I carry band aids and antiseptic wipes in my bag all the time. Consider doing so yourselves.
Also consider keeping diagonal cutters handy. They might just save your day.

To that add a pair of loonngg needlenose pliers. I keep my hands at a distance. Always figured a boca in one hand and pliers in the other ever since a big bluefish ate the end of my thumb.

That sounds like a story Flytier 😳

Ouch that a bummer to start the day, glad to see you have cutters and able to get the Barb cut off the way it was hook.πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½

Ouch! Hazard of our passion! Happened to a friend of mine while in Lake Erie in 2-3 foot rollers, lost his balance and buried a crawler harness hook under his thumbnail. I cut the line and we fished for 3 more hours before I convinced him to call it a day(Fish were on!)
He had to go to hospital to have it removed.. an avid fisherman!πŸ€ͺ

That’s some grit.

Mine came while f mo under fishing. Got a smaller fish on a high low rig and he wiggled at the wrong time. Buried the second hook in my finger.

Oh yeah. Done that too.

It was simple enough. I caught an 11 pound blue on a 16 inch live bunker. I slid my hand down the steel leader and it flipped up and bit me. Took the tip off to the nail. Wasn't a lot of skin, but it sure was a reminder. BTW the fish was worth a couple hundred in the tournament. πŸ™‚πŸ™‚πŸ™‚

I shared this a few years ago about a buddy of mine who went trolling for walleyes on the Wolf River, using a #9 Shad Rap. He hooked an 11# Northern Pike and noticed he did not put his net in the boat. He tried to grab the fish behind the head and the fished jumped and snagged Tom with the second treble hook through the thumb on his right hand (through the fingerprint and out through the nail). Suddenly all heck broke loose and the fish wanted to show Tom the error in his ways. A not tired pike has a lot of energy and the fish basically had his way with my buddy. Luckily, Tom did have his filet knife and was able to behead the fish. Then it was a 30 minute boat ride into Oshkosh to the Emergency Room. He said the boat looked like it was the scene in a horror movie.

Been there, done that Jer. At least the fish was successfully released. I carry a pair of side cutters for just such an occasion. The Arthur in my thumbs makes lippin bigger fish risky for me and the fish. I don't like dropping and bruising them, so I use a net, lip gripper, and a wet rag if needed, to handle them. The added bonus is less chances of being impaled.

Absolutely right with the wet rag, Fred.
That has saved us in the past too.

For sure, Grizz. That would have been quite a bit more painful.

Always look on the bright side. Yup, having the barb come through was a blessing in disguise.
