I remember the first bike I ever had, but it didn't have training wheels. Out was a used bike my Dad got and brush painted with some leftover house paint to dress it up a bit. Went straight to on my own. Spent a large part of my life on bikes, often 20 to 30 miles in a day.

What about those nuns Wulffy?

Plum not sure why you keep mentioning the Nuns when you know they caught you trying to ride with or on sheep. Never seen sheep with training wheels

Had my share of knucklebusters! Ahh, Sister Mary Catherine

Who among us remembers those training wheels coming off?

Or that parent nearly running along our side helping us keep our balance?

Well safe to say we all have been on our own for quite some time.

Shaky as it may seem, let’s keep moving forward.

Thank a parent today for making you feel safe.

Brings up my favorite saying that I have tried to live by. Written by John Wooden

"Learn as though you are going to live forever" and "Live as you are going to die tomorrow"

Our parents were there to make us feel safe. I agree we have been on our own for quite a while.

Same here GW. My old man brought a bicycle home from work one day. I was in 2nd grade. Ride it up n down the alley till supper. Got home from school next day to find he took it work n sold it. Never had another till after I was divorced. Bought a MTN bike to ride the towpath n find places to fish in the Potomac river. 1st bike after divorce didn't have peddles. Learned about everything the hard way 🤕😁

That's horrible.

Yes, first one was same one my older sister learned on, aqua blue. Do remember the trainers but only one day. Got around West Phillie on the bike and into some trouble 7-8 yrs old. 5 yrs younger than my siblings so I learned a lot on my own but parents were always there if I needed. Was lucky to learn from their example. Don't remember more than a few disagreements.

Reading that Plum has me thinking that a lot of us could use those training wheels now

I was taught like Wulfy. Never had training wheels or someone holding my hand at anything. My elders, especially my Mom, taught me to learn for myself. That way I’d retain it and it’s worked well👍. She guided me along the way and tried to steer me away from certain death but most things I figured out on my own. I lost some good friends along the way when I was younger and I have to say I was VERY lucky growing up doing thing the way I did but I made it through and I’ll be 67 in a couple of weeks💪👊.

The pointers were worse than the yardsticks.

Another good one Plum, But I'm with Wulffy on this. The older kids taught us younger ones wit no training wheels. One push and you were on your on.

Old Mammy Wheeler in second grade was a magician with that yardstick. Might still have the welts to prove it!🥸🥸
