Keeping a second place takes a lot of work.
Goal is to have wife’s step mom keep it.
If she decides to bail , I’ll buy it.
Can’t let something that’s been in my wife’s family for over 70 years get away

Hope it all works out well in everyone's favor. Sounds like a real treasure of a place!

You are exhibiting the true spirit of a fisherman, accepting the challenge of discovery. I actually feel sorry for fishermen who are asking where the 'honey holes' are. They should go out and find their own, which is a big part of the fun of fishing. Just Sayin...RJS

Now thats about as real a statement as I've heard out here RJS. You've got me by a few years but I grew up fishing without a forum like this and had to discover some of my own Honey holes, granted its nice when you can get some useful tips from locals but I also love the thrill of the chase,I also use the tried and true method of using my eyes, when I see a group of boats in one area and not over there than chances are they know something I don't and its up to me to investigate further. This activity we love is called Fishing(not catching) The catching part is a bonus of doing our own homework.

Ben:

I've yakked that lake a few times. Mostly 3 feet deep. Lotsa small bass and larger panfish. Saugeye few and far between. Mostly a crappie lake but you gotta know where to look for them. Good Luck.

When I see a group of boats together on a new body of water, I mark my boats GPS point and take a compass Bering on the boats. I move and do the same thing so that I can get a range (no radar on my smaller boat) That way I do not have to crowd or disturb others. I then come back when there are no boats to see if there is structure or another reason for the group of boats, or just people crowding a person who found a school of hatchery trout or other traveling school fish. I just don't like fishing in crowds.

Hey Bapa,

That's a great tactic! Shows respect for others in two ways: 1.) Let's them have their spot without interruption; 2.) Gives them credit that they might just be on to a good spot that you can check later.

Buried my father in law on Feb 6
Only my wife’s step mom and her brother remain.
Anyway, wife’s great grandfather built a place on Lake Loramie about 1:15 minutes north of me.
He built this right on the water in a choice spot . About 75 years ago. The lake is 1655 acre lake.

3 years ago her dad had the place completely remodeled . Had a new concrete dock with a lift and just last year traded his pontoon for a brand new one.
Engine break in not even done.

I’m gonna help with the upkeep to help mother in law out.

So I have a new lake to learn. It’s a legendary crappie lake and the bass and saugeye are supposed to be fantastic.
Fished it before but not seriously.
I love a new challenge , and with the new job, I’ll have time to do it .

Ben, that’s just wonderful except for your FIL passing. If I lived close I’d be happy to help you learn the lake and help MIL out, but I don’t so I just thought I’d mention that. 😬

I also do the same thing when I see a bass boat stay in the same general location for a long time, or an anchored fishing boat spend a lot of time in the same location. It was harder in the old days pre GPS when I had to take bearings to find out where I was located as well. Note: I will fish natural structure, but I will not fish some ones personal artificial reef intentionally. It is so much easier now with the new electronics to identify natural from artificial stuff. I have not found that much of a problem here as planting artificial cover is illegal. Usually local cover is made from a tethered Christmas tree and dropped in violation of the law. As such, I don't consider it private. If it is not being fished it is fair game.

Sorry about your family’s loss, that’s great you are going to keep it in the family. What is your plan of attack when you start dissecting a new lake? Do you target a certain species or structure first?

Sounds like a place I'd want to keep no matter what.
