I remember fishing with my Dad and little brother in a Iowa farm pond, I was 5 and my brother was 4 and my dad had us fishing with cane poles and bobbers for bass. Since the pole was to big for me to set the hook my dad said " when you see the bobber go under the water , pick up the pole and run". the bobber went under and I just took off running, forgot the pick up the pole part. I still laugh at that story 60 years later.

👍🏻😂👍🏻

Two—my mom dropping us off at a local lake with my buddies. We fished all day and brought a frying pan and cooked the fish we caught for lunch.
I lost a huge bass as a kid while fishing with my little brother. I whipped the water in anger with my pole and somehow snagged the fish and pulled him out. My brother was super impressed and boy was I surprised!

The story of snagging the fish is crazy. I'm impressed you brought the frying pan and cooked the fish you cooked.

It was fun fishing, starting a fire, cooking and sometimes we’d go swimming. My Tom Sawyer childhood. 50 years later snagged this rock bass the same way.

My dad and two other men decided to run the Pitt river in Northern California. My dad didn’t know that no one else had successfully made it from point A to point B. Not knowing the risk, he took me along. It was a wild and crazy run, super fun and a bit scary at times. Spent one night on an island, I stayed up all night catching big trout. The next day, both of our 12 man rafts flipped and we lost all our gear. We were in sight of all the wife’s and kids waiting for us on the beach. No one got hurt, but my dad was freaked out, because I ended up under one of the rafts. We were written up in Life Magazine. I wish I had a copy to post. I thought it was the best trip ever.

When I was about 12, my dad built a small 7” boat out of sheet metal and a frame on the back of my bike to tow the trailer. My friend and I would peddle out to a small lake just outside of Burney, Ca to go fishing. Dad eventually built another frame for my friends bike and a cross bar, so we could both pull the trailer at the same time. We went to that lake about every other day during the summer. We caught lots of fish, and we even got caught skinny dipping by a couple of girls, who made us stay in the water for what seemed like forever.

Jogged my memory
Canoe trip when I was 18 on the Connecticut river from Canada half way down Vermont/New Hampshire. The river divides Vermont and New Hampshire. Every night we would decide whether to sleep in New Hampshire or Vermont.

My all time favorite nemory is fishing at my buddy’s pond.
Balled Skaggs pond.
Saw my friend Steve Skaggs Caught a legit 5 pounder off a night crawler we shocked from the ground the night before.
Eagle Claw yellow rod and a Diawa reel
First legit 5 pounder I ever saw.
Obviously my sights were set on beating that.

Aside from that. I’ve caught bigger , but beating this guy was always a priority.

Back in the 60's, 70's we fished the Deschutes River between Olympia and Tenino WA. For bait, we would catch crawdads in China Creek that flowed under Centralia's streets. Then about 7-8 PM we would head to the Deschutes and fish until midnight. We would go our separate ways and fish. Caught a lot of Cutthroat trout. Sometimes after not getting a bite for a while, I would reel in only to find that I had been fishing with my hook up in a tree! Sometimes got spooked by noises in the dark.

I remember another time I, my brother, and 3 friends camped there. We did a lot of fishing during day and early night. Didn't catch too many, but had a good time. One day we were skinny dipping and heard a noise across the river. Turned out to be a teenage gal with her parents on horses. Most of us stayed standing up and my brother was the only one that was smart and ducked in the water?

On the third night it started raining hard. We didn't have tents. Walked to a farmhouse at 2:00 AM and called my Dad to pick us up. He never let me forget that.

Another time my Dad, wife, and I fished further up the river during the daytime. My wife and I walked to the river while my Dad was getting his gear ready. First cast, I caught an 18" trout. I walked back up to the truck and held the fish up and told my Dad "See how big the fish are here"? That portion of the river didn't have a lot of good banks to fish from and that was the only fish we caught.

I used to fish the Cowlitz River for Salmon in the Fall. One Labor day two friend and I were trolling for Salmon in the Columbia River just past the mouth of the Cowlitz. I caught a 19# salmon. My two friends had got their lines tangled up and were trying to get them untangled. Meanwhile I started trolling again and a few minutes later I caught a 27# salmon. They still were getting the gear untangled. Not too many salmon caught by fisherman that day but I got lucky and caught 46#'s of salmon in 1/2 hour! Back at the boat launch we met a couple from Minnesota. While the husband went to get the trailer, I used her camera to take a picture of her holding up my two salmon She wasn't going to tell him until the got the film developed. I wonder what he thought when he saw the pictures.

A friend's mother-in-law lived near Vanderhoof, British Columbia, Canada which is 600 plus miles north of Seattle. We fished Nulki Lake for Rainbow trout. There were 5 of us in two boats. Various lures/bait would work but the best was trolling with a large Ford Fender and a worm. One time my buddy and I were in my boat. I had caught 3 nice 14-16" trout. Then I caught a 22" trout. I put the trout on my stringer and for some reason the stringer came loose and all 4 fish went overboard. I was sick. Biggest trout I have ever caught. I ended up getting another 5 trout all in the 14-16" range. My buddy caught 1 fish. The other 3 people in another boat caught their limits.

We watched an eagle catch a fish. After a while it dropped the fish and started to fly away. An Osprey saw the fish and decided he wanted it. The Eagle saw that and said "Hey, what are you doing?". The eagle started chasing the Osprey. They were fighting and screeching directly over us. Finally the Osprey started flying away with the eagle chasing it. Then a second eagle got into the chase. Shortly after, we saw the Osprey drop the fish and fly off. Cool to watch.

For you FS members that started fishing as a kid, what is your favorite memory of those younger years? Day, time, place, results?

I have mine but I'll post it later. I'm more interested in reading yours right now. A good distraction for me right now.

My earliest memory is one when my Dad was still alive. We lost him to a Car wreck when I was 13. He took Us, mom, brother, sister and me up on Sand Creek, off Hwy 97 north of Klamath. I think I might have been 8 or 9, still learning, and I was the oldest. We fished the little creek till we had caught a number of little trout. I don’t even remember for sure what we we using, worms I think. Dad had taken an old cast iron skillet and some oil and salt/pepper. He built a fire along side the creek and we eat those trout right there! Best tasting fish I ever eat!
