I can't respond to each one of Y'all so I'll do it all at once. Thanks for sharing your stories. I have read each and every one of them and they all were great. I felt like I was right there with you. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to some more. Great post Greg.

I was always looking down into water like any kid would figuring I should se the fish not realizing they were there to eat not look up at a kid hanging his head over the edges

Have no idea. It was not a big lake, but I was fishing the exit of it. We arrived the night before in the dark and they told me about the lake so I walked over to fish it. I still believe that frogs are the best bait in the world for Bass though. LOL Minn, 10,000 lakes 1000 fish is not really correct. Lots more fish than that. IMO

I camped at Pinto Lake in Watsonville California for a week, three years in a row. There was nothing on the lake back then except a little campground with a bar/bait shop. We would camp for a week during Easter break. Just my brother, brother in law and a friend of mine. No grown ups. As young teens, that was awesome. We rented wooden row boats that weighed a ton, but rowed at a perfect speed to catch crappie. It made a great platform to learn how to catch bass with lures (lazy ike, hula popper and jitter bug.). It was the first week the park was open, so we usually had the campground to ourselves with the exception of a few locals who stopped by the bar. Our camping gear was Army surplus including shelter half tents.

I find it so interesting that so many of us where around 12 years old when we had these great experiences. Those are truly magical years when your a kid!

I think because when we were younger we had someone teaching us and holding our hand. About twelve or so we knew the correct ways to fish and we ventured out on our own, and our parents let us go. Tell a 12 year old today to go catch a fish and they look at you like this

With so many, I would say any fishing with my dad, is a great memory.

This. Fishing with my Dad, (or my Mom or Aunt, who would take me in the summer if Dad was working). They're all gone now, but the memories are still fresh 50 years later.

I remember fishing with my Dad and little brother in a Iowa farm pond, I was 5 and my brother was 4 and my dad had us fishing with cane poles and bobbers for bass. Since the pole was to big for me to set the hook my dad said " when you see the bobber go under the water , pick up the pole and run". the bobber went under and I just took off running, forgot the pick up the pole part. I still laugh at that story 60 years later.

I have mine but I'll post it later. I'm more interested in reading yours right now. A good distraction for me right now.

Catching my 1st Yellowtail with my Grandfather when I was 9 out of San Diego.
Went on many trips after that !!
I was very lucky going up
And having a Grandfather who took me deep sea fishing.
Have a great day

I remember my Dad teaching me how to fish with a bobber and salmon eggs, for bluegill. I think that I was four. I clearly remember the spot, right next to a tree on the bank of one of a series of private lakes in Southern California. I went back and found that same spot 70 years later, the tree is still there.

Where did you grow up in Southern California?
I grew up in Whitter. Which lakes and ponds did you fish?
When I turn 16 my buddies and I drove all over to fish park lakes and any bodies of water we could find , and lakes.
We also would sneak at night and fish the golf ⛳️ core ponds.
Have a good day

Hi G1, stories like stars--dads and kids have a lot of them. My Dad was always a big fisherman and taught me early in grammar school the neat feeling of having a fish on the other end of the line. We often used live shiners for bass and pickerel. The favorite part was going to a small pond we knew of in the woods where we would seine for our shiners, hide them in a nearby stream until the next day and then head out to one of several lakes in North Jersey to put those little guys to work. Also, patience was learned early on. Avoided instant gratification needs.
