Started fishing the headwaters of the Big Deschutes river in 1957… I was 6….every summer for 2 weeks…. The fishing was and still is phenomenal….Brook trout to 24”
My favorite memory was being asked to go on Atlantic Salmon fly fishing trip to the Miramichi River, New Brunswick Canada. I was not an experienced fly fisherman. Had an old fiberglass fly rod with single action fly reel and old salmon flies from an old friend I worked for that gifted them to me. (he tied them) Caught my first salmon on 152nd cast. Yes, I was counting. Saw a moose get shot, it was huge. And finally, getting up just before the break of dawn, sitting on the porch. As the sun began to rise, it started to melt the heavy frost on the tin roof of the cabin. It started as a slow dripping, that increased in pace, the higher the sun rose. It reminded me of the old Maxwell House coffee commercials.

We used to vacation at Lake Bummiseen (sp?) in Vermont near Rutland. We rented a house on the lake that came with a 12’ aluminum row boat. Dad packed our Sears and Roebucks 5hp motor and as soon as we unpacked, it was on the back of that row boat. We fished, swam and cooked what we caught and had bonfires every night. We caught bass and crappies like crazy! Solitude!
My brother came out to fish with me. He brought his motorcycle, and a Diawa mini cast system, cuz he could carry it on his bike.
He was always thinking BIG. We got to our spot, and he rigged up a red and white 3 inch daredevil. He threw that thing about
50 yards, probably close to spooling the thing. He cranked on it for maybe ten feet and got a hit. He fought that northern pike
for what seemed a half hour. The boats around us were gathering to see what was happening. He brought in about a 7 lbs
pike and was so dang proud of his new rod and tiny reel.

If that motor was white my dad had the same one.
The day my son explained fishing to me. He was 12 yo, now 32, fishing Muskie in Canada. He was using a bass rod and 3/8 oz spinner bait. I kept telling him to use his musky rod. He hooks a big Northern Pike and battles her to the boat. Turns out to be 48 1/2 inches. Photos and released. He turns to me and says
“ Sometimes they want a T Bone steak and sometimes just a French Fry”

For you FS members that started fishing as a kid, what is your favorite memory of those younger years? Day, time, place, results?
I have mine but I'll post it later. I'm more interested in reading yours right now. A good distraction for me right now.
One of my favorites that I can remember, from when I was a kid , was me and my 2 brothers went bluegill fishing at cow creek in bridge city Texas. We brought three poles and hooks , split shot , some bobbers. My brother had a paper bag with worms and wet dirt in it. I also brought my single shot .410 . Well needless to say as we were trying to get to “ the spot” , the bag split on the bottom and we lost most of our bait . One of my brothers was griping at my other brother ( the bait bag holder) . So how can we catch fish now ? I took my .410 and managed to shoot a sparrow. We used it for bait , caught bluegill , and my mom cooked them up for supper that night. I was a hero ! ....My 2cents.
