Over the past few weeks my eldest grandson has called to chat with me three different times. He can never remember his name (I always have to guess it) and he is always on vacation in Boston and coming home soon. I have been playing along with this thinking the best way to harm a phone scammer is to waste his or her time as much as possible. I keep waiting for the hammer to drop and be asked for money.
However this morning it occurred to me that I might be outsmarting myself. Perhaps they aren't after money directly from me but are recording my voice through repeated conversations for some nefarious purpose. Who knows but in future I plan to no longer engage in conversation.

Jim, here is my list of scammers just in the last 2 weeks. Amazon closed my account since someone purchased more than i normally do. " Not " Amazon said they never call anyone.
Pay Pal closed my account for lack of payment. Please call to pay. " Not " Never had a Pay Pay account
Microsoft has hit my bank account for $ 389 on the automatic payment plan. " Not " Microsoft doesn't send emails.
Then there is the Nigerian guy wanting to give me $ 15 K from a beneficiary payment of my long lost relative. " Not " Only remaining relative still kicking.
Then there is the hacker that pretends he is a family member in need of $ 400.00 because of illness and can't get to the bank. Clever this one is because he has hacked a family members email list and the incoming email looks like it is from them. Bottom line there is, call the family member.
This is just 5 of a few more. Hardest part is telling the wife not to say " Yes " when answering questions on the phone from those that she doesn't know.

They are certainly recording your responses to use against you. By all means, never say yes when they ask if it is you when they call. Hang up or don’t answer a call from a number you don’t recognize!
My response is who wants to know?

Life would be much simpler without those puppies around. I don't think I would receive a phone call if those dumb a$$es wouldn't call. Maybe I have something there.

Yep, if they can record you saying YES or something similar they use it as your acceptance of something.
That is why we always let the call go to the recording unless we know who it is calling.
IF they don't say my name and say "Fishing", I don't answer it, if I don't recognize the caller.
I answer in Vietnamese. All I know is how to say is no smoking in bed . They hang up

You could always answer "Mussie, Mussie" Spelling is wrong but it is used by the Japanesse when they answer the phone. That and Thank you are about all I know. The wife learned a lot of it when thinking about going there.
