This fish was a great fight! I thought it was a baby jack. But now I’m not so sure after seeing pics of small jacks

That’s definitely a Blue runner.

I’m not sure if ppl are reading all the comments on this post before they post their comments or not. But to me it seems like if you look at the pics and read comments, this fish has more similarities to the blue runner than a yellow jack. Yet ppl keep saying yellow jack. What am I missing? Was hoping by now there would be a more definitive answer. Looks like this one is still up for grabs.

Yes, I see what you mean. I have looked online at pictures of both blue runner and yellow Jack . And they are very similar and hard for me to see a difference. I have never seen them here in NJ. We have fish here that are known by several names, maybe that’s the case with this fish.

I'm currently in a state of euphoria. I'm from Ma. I fish from t3-r11 in Maine to Key west Florida and most waters in between. (both fresh and salt) Recently Lost my mentor of 37 years Walter Ungermann. He made it possible for me to fish the Azores, south Africa, Mexico, and Jupiter inlet (where his house is , on the right on your way in) . Walter taught me how to navigate without any electronics, how to read water, how to fly cast better, when to fish and when to wait, put me on my first White Marlin, my first striper (56#), and all of my other pelagic fish. What he taught me has made me unwelcome in some places because they have been fishing for hours and I show up and hook up in 5 minutes. Sorry....not! Old saying " 10% of the fisherman catch 90% of the fish" I currently have been tagging striped bass for the MA dept of fisheries ( for the last 6 years) . Last fish this year (salt) 18" Tautog. still fishing for fall trout.

Just had a thought........ in all the years I fished with Walter (both fresh and salt) he was more into teaching me than fishing himself. our last year in Cabo I out fished him on the Panga, that did not go well for the next couple of years. so to answer your query I caught tons of fish, Walter taught me how.

you have three options. reply, quote reply, quick reply. it's always best to hit quote reply so we all know who you are responding to. such as I have just done

For my money the fish is a blue runner. They have a dark spot on the gill covers unlike yellow jacks. They are often colored with yellow on the extremities. Most importantly yellow jacks that size have oval spots, one of the few jacks that do. The mouth shape is another giveaway.

Well thanks rip for sharing a little of your life story. My story is a hellva a lot shorter most of my fishing life was spent on North Point Peninsula and surrounding areas My Dad started fishing as a small boy after that I broke away on my own In the early 60s I’d go by myself or my bud Terry. We fish just before Spring the Rock would be come to spawn. In the warm months we wouldn’t come home at all parents would have the police out looking for us You what rip this story could get longer then yours Did all my adventures as kid n teenager We’d stay for day not wanting for not. Plenty of farms around with vegetables n fruit 🍎 and more fish then we could eat. Nothing like a pan size Rock gutted , wash off in the Bay and cook on stick over open fire 🔥 with the corn on the cob Damn let stop this story could turn into book Anyway thanks for sharing
