I think it’s a blue runner. They do have yellow coloration on their cheeks and the spot on the gill plate. The fin behind the Gill plate is long and pointed also. Light blue wide stripe pattern appears faintly on sides also.

Most of the time you get about 10 or 15 different guesses. I'm surprised it's between two fish only. Good post MoW. Keeps us on our toes.

Yes it is a Yellow Jack. Great fighter like all Jacks. Some say's it good eating but some people like Bluefish. I personally think there are way better saltwater fish to eat.

I'm currently in a state of euphoria. I'm from Ma. I fish from t3-r11 in Maine to Key west Florida and most waters in between. (both fresh and salt) Recently Lost my mentor of 37 years Walter Ungermann. He made it possible for me to fish the Azores, south Africa, Mexico, and Jupiter inlet (where his house is , on the right on your way in) . Walter taught me how to navigate without any electronics, how to read water, how to fly cast better, when to fish and when to wait, put me on my first White Marlin, my first striper (56#), and all of my other pelagic fish. What he taught me has made me unwelcome in some places because they have been fishing for hours and I show up and hook up in 5 minutes. Sorry....not! Old saying " 10% of the fisherman catch 90% of the fish" I currently have been tagging striped bass for the MA dept of fisheries ( for the last 6 years) . Last fish this year (salt) 18" Tautog. still fishing for fall trout.
