I was a "Campus Host" for my school, Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, a small Methodist college, from 1973-75. Our usual tasks were to give campus tours to guests and visiting dignitaries, wearing our orange blazers and black slacks. Not sure which year, but Bob H. came to headline a B.Univ. charity fundraiser held in K.C. and I was privileged to be chosen to be one of the escorts of his small entourage. Didn't have much interaction with the man himself, but the few minutes I did have in his presence were stellar. The man was simply able to make you smile or chuckle with even the most mundane conversation. I believe it was his intense attention and yet, cavalier attitude that bordered on sarcasm, that made me appreciate him so. He asked me if I was on the golf team like some of the other hosts were, and I replied, "no sir, I'm a swimmer and diver, though I have taken a P.E. class in golf". His quip was "so ...I guess they use you to retrieve the water shots, huh ? Golfers gotta have balls if they plan on continuing to play, don't they ?" Just so quick-witted every minute.
Sweet guy, put on a great show raising us some $$$, and kept us in stitches.
