I put this picture into another post on here, but thought I would do a separate post to see if I might get more responses. I find it fascinating, the number of names we all have for the same fish in different parts of the country. So, these are just about anywhere in the US that folks fish, except for a few places probably, when you catch one what do you call it?

And the second picture, where could I go in California to catch one of those? And what would you calll it?

First fish is generally called a bluegill. But they have several color varieties. That's what is confusing. Here in the Central Valley of California the plain muted color ones are called bluegill. But there are the more colorful red ear sunfish and pumpkin seed. That second fish is not a West Coast fish that I am familiar with.

Bluegill and yellow perch and both are very good eating😁👍

¡¡Yep!! ... I remember that up in NE Massachusetts; people called the bluegill a "Kibby" or "Kibble"... Not entirely sure how it would have been spelled. I don't remember any Yellow Perch up in New England. ¿They got'em up there, any of you New Englanders?
Also, the Bluegill might've been called "Bream" (Brim); at Bayou Pigeon, LA.

That's supposed to be: "Kibby" or "Kibbie"... NOT DOG FOOD.

The bottom fish is called a yellow perch in all IGFA and Taxonomy charts used by most states and federal fish and game departments. The same sources ID the upper fish as being in the sunfish family and the species is blue gill. There are multiple species in the sunfish family. IGFA and government agencies recognizes them as different species even though they are in the sunfish family. Much like, spotted, large mouth, small mouth are all different species ( Surprise, yes, bass are also species of the sunfish family) I believe all of the fish mentioned by Whitereb are sunfish. There are several more in the sunfish family. That being said, there are a variety of local and regional names for nearly all sun fish as well as the common habit of including different species under the same name. Many people call anything that will fit in a pan bluegill, bream, panfish or perch. When it comes right down to it, who cares if you know the limit of what you are catching, how to clean it and how to eat it. Almost all of us grew up on perch or sunfish.

Thanks, Fred... All the while I'd lived "up in that neck"; I only fished 2 different ponds and the Ocean... I'd never caught a Perch up there. (Right good eating fish!)

Yes they are, but small ones are too boney to bother with.

Yah, I gotchya on that, Fred... It's just that I can remember, years ago, they'd have "Lake Erie Perch Fries" every Friday, for many years, at a few local taverns around the Dirty City... Man, that's starting to activate my appetite!

The top fish is what we call a bluegill here in Michigan. The bottom fish is a yellow perch (both fish are great eating fish) I myself prefer the perch but the bluegill is next on my list for eating fish. Yum!
