Spirit... I'm trying to find a day in the next couple of weeks so we can go check out that little lake in between lakes we learned about. But, you have to get on board with posting pics of fish! Lol. Maybe you need to wear my lucky hat. It has powerful MOJO.

73 years old, been fishing since I was a toddler, and I'm still learning. I normally use that set up in small streams with crystal clear water and if you catch a 12 inch trout it's enormous. Why'd I tie on that Silver Minnow? Seemed like a good idea at the time. Years ago I used those silver "spoons" to catch pike. I'd never tried one for trout, but I figured why not? Well that was a studly fish that took it, and now due to my choice of 2 pound line, he is swimming around with it hooked in his jaw. Maybe. It was barbless.

Spirit, I’m still learning as well. I believe a Smart Man always does if he allows it. I believe I’m with Saw on this one of line poundage. I used to use 4# on my old FlyRod, but lost too many fish in the mountain creeks so I went to 6# and that seemed to stop most of the losses. Till this day I don’t use any under 6# on Any of my rods, trout, crappie, ect. Since I have changed most of my day to day rods/reels over to Braid I use 8# leader w/10#braid for SM & 12# leader w/20#braid for LM. Most of that is just because of the rocks and trees we have been dragging the fish through or out of, but it seems to work. I also believe your big fish will have that barbless hook out of its mouth by dinner time. Thanks for the pics, those are some pretty waters.

Yeah I'm sure my little 1/4 oz spoon didn't slow that guy down an iota. Wish I had at least been able to get a look at it. You know what? Just having a nice one on and playing it for a little bit was very satisfying. Maybe I'm onto something.
Except those spoons are about 7 dollars a pop. Maybe not.

Did an over-nighter up in the Truckee/Tahoe area. Caught my now "normal" amount of trout. You see em. First photo is Martis Creek Lake, south of Truckee. I was using the rod in the bottom photo (my wife's) with 2 pound fluoro on a Nasci reel with a barbless 1/4 oz copper Johnson Silver Minnow and a root beer colored grub - a big one slammed it and I fought it for a bit, but it broke off. Made me feel like I might be back in the game at least. Martis Creek is home to some big browns and lahonton cutthroats. Strictly artificial/barbless, C&R for all trout. Saw them rising in the late morning. Saw one jump pretty far out, had to be at least a 2 footer - a great beast. Spectacular! The other lake is Webber, north of Truckee - the wind was howling Not a good time there. My first trip to either. I'll be going back to Martis Creek with my tube. Perfect small lake for that. + positively GREAT access for a tube or a kayak - but no boat ramp - no motors allowed. That's what the sign said - not sure if that includes electrics?

All this about an hour or so from my house.

Yep I miss those mountain lakes and streams. Sorry you broke off but at least you finally hooked one. Good idea to up the poundage. Great luck when you go back in your tube. 👍

Spirit, did you by any chance catch the KCRA news this morning on Folsom Lake Chinook?
Sterile Chinook were planted in Folsom some time ago. People are catching 8-10” Chinook in Folsom which means somehow they successfully spawned in the American River. Fish and Game checked it out and it turns out these are not the stockers!
Kinda cool!
Got a boat? 😊

I did not. Interesting. I will check it out. Thanks. Some years ago I fished Folsom with a bass fishin buddy and I was kinda trolling with a chunk of mackerel hoping to attract channel cat. I hooked into a small salmon - maybe 3 pounds or so. I ate real well. I do not have a boat. I have a tube and a kayak and a inflatable pontoon. Folsom is not a small personal craft friendly kinda lake.

Hey you guys and gals. I'm gonna put some bigger line on that Nasci reel. I want to stick with fluoro. What do you all recommend? What's a real good fluoro?

Spirit, for light fluoro I use Trilene 100%fluoro XL. It's softer than regular 100%,and Vanish. They only make the XL up to about 17lb. I have 14lb on my Crankbait rod, and use 8lb for leader on my finesse rod. It's also cheaper than most other brands.

I’ve been using 2lb test mono for years. PB was a rainbow that went almost 12 lbs. I’ve had smaller fish snap me off.it happens. gotta check your line more often (me too).

Just got back from Reno. Too hot! I forgotten about Martin Creek. Gonna have to give it a try.
