Did an over-nighter up in the Truckee/Tahoe area. Caught my now "normal" amount of trout. You see em. First photo is Martis Creek Lake, south of Truckee. I was using the rod in the bottom photo (my wife's) with 2 pound fluoro on a Nasci reel with a barbless 1/4 oz copper Johnson Silver Minnow and a root beer colored grub - a big one slammed it and I fought it for a bit, but it broke off. Made me feel like I might be back in the game at least. Martis Creek is home to some big browns and lahonton cutthroats. Strictly artificial/barbless, C&R for all trout. Saw them rising in the late morning. Saw one jump pretty far out, had to be at least a 2 footer - a great beast. Spectacular! The other lake is Webber, north of Truckee - the wind was howling Not a good time there. My first trip to either. I'll be going back to Martis Creek with my tube. Perfect small lake for that. + positively GREAT access for a tube or a kayak - but no boat ramp - no motors allowed. That's what the sign said - not sure if that includes electrics?

All this about an hour or so from my house.

Great post spirit, beautiful area! Well I had a trout break me off this past weekend. Was using 8lb braid, with 6 lb leader. It could have got wrapped around the weeds, but it broke at the knot. You know what they say about re-tying knots once in awhile. I had been trolling a spinning around for quite awhile before the big one broke off.
There’s some nice trout in the lake I was fishin’. Here’s proof. Was gonna do a separate post, still will.

Outfished by my wife, lol

Like I said, I usually only use that reel when I'm not expecting to catch anything bigger than about 8 or 10 inches. I posted a picture of a trout I caught up on the Stanislaus and it was caught with that reel and that line. Lots of little brookies in there too. I spent a day up there a few years ago and wore those little guys and girls out. Great fun. Live and learn, right? I shoulda known better. It'll be 12 or 15 when I return. And I will.

Sounds like a great trip spirit glad you had a good time beautiful pictures beautiful country up there I'm actually heading up to the June loop area first week of July can't wait thank you for the pictures and the post

Wow! That is clear water. Maybe with your tube, you will get a nice trout and lure along with it.

You said tube. Do you mean pontoon? At least you had a trout on. I fly clear across this beautiful country and my son caught the only trout I saw!

Looked it up - absolutely NO motors allowed, neither gas nor electric !
Great place for your 'fishing tube' !
I currently have two rod set-ups -
one is a light action with 4-lb. test (mostly for trout), the other is a medium-action with 6-lb. test ! The second (med.) one usually has an extra 'back-up' spoolloaded with
10- to 12-lb. Trilene XT (or braid)
for those times that heavier
line/gear is called for !

I meant tube. There's no ramp on that lake. I saw a couple dudes out there yesterday tubing it and I was kidskin myself for not throwing mine into the truck. I've had some good times fishing from that tube. I's talking to a guy who was going out in kayak who's familiar with the lake and he told me it's a good lake for a tube or a yak because it's protected from the wind. You can get blown off a lot of those lakes up there when the wind comes up in the afternoon.

73 years old, been fishing since I was a toddler, and I'm still learning. I normally use that set up in small streams with crystal clear water and if you catch a 12 inch trout it's enormous. Why'd I tie on that Silver Minnow? Seemed like a good idea at the time. Years ago I used those silver "spoons" to catch pike. I'd never tried one for trout, but I figured why not? Well that was a studly fish that took it, and now due to my choice of 2 pound line, he is swimming around with it hooked in his jaw. Maybe. It was barbless.

Only time I use anything 2# is on my 4wt fly rod. Only trout I'm going to catch are going to max out at maybe 14 inches.
