Looks like a yellow banded rudderfish. Caught a couple back a ways in Jersey, took me four days to find someone who knew what it was.

I also hooked something yesterday that I had to cut loose. It just kept taking line. There was no way I could land it. I even have 2 witnesses. Lol we all tried to land it and just decided to cut the line.

If you were further out in deep water, could be a giant tuna. Have had that happen with too light of gear.
Instead of cutting and losing a lot of line, just tighten down the drag all the way so the fish breaks off at the hook.

Thanks for the information I will remember that about the line. I just couldn’t hold and didn’t want to break my pole

Hold spool and point the rod at the fish.
