Hi Paul. I'm getting my boat ready for trolling for kokanee and trout for the first time, and plan to fish Shaver (and other lakes) pretty soon.
I paid for a subscription to the Fresno Bee's digital edition to get the fish report every Tuesday, and I also stop by Sportsman's Warehouse and read the chalk board once a week or so. They both have local reports.
I'll start posting here once I get the hang of both this board and the fishing!

Dear Spiritof27:

Can you recommend a good place for trout shore fishing that’s within an hour’s drive of Sutter Creek? I was told New Melones Lake, but it’s huge, and I have no idea what part of the shore to fish from!

Thanks,

GCM

Hi GCM,

Aren't you closer to Camanche, Pardee, and New Hogan, have you tried any of those? I have fished New Melones quite a bit but mostly from a boat. There is a lot of shore access from the Tuttle Town boat ramp off 49. Good Luck!

Shaver is about 5600 ft elevation and Huntington is over 7000.

Huntington isn't open yet due to road access. Quiet lake for the most part, primarily fishing boats and sailboats. Fun lake to troll for rainbows and Kokanee.

Shaver is a bigger lake but we never go on the weekend. Water skiing, houseboats and Jet skis are all over the place. Some nice trout trolling and Kokanee if the boat traffic is light.

Sounds good Andy. I've made it out to Don Pedro a couple times this year. I mostly fish for trout there, Melones, and McClure/McSwain. I also love fishing creeks and streams in the Sierras. I don't do a whole lot of bass fishing like you but do have some gear. I pulled in to Fleming Meadows last Saturday at 6am thinking I would beat everybody in the lake but found out there was a bass tournament so I was there with about 100 other boats! Caught 1 rainbow that day trolling about 20' deep. Happy Fishing!

Many years ago we fished Huntington Lake succesfully from the dam with a sliding bobber setup and a crawler or bubble filled with water and a powerworm.

Hi. I’m going to take some time off next week to fish somewhere in the Sierras or nearby. Thinking about Lake Davis, Frenchmen, or maybe French Meadows. I fished Ice House on a day trip last week (very slow bite). Anyways, any thoughts on a These lakes or others similar. April should be solid everywhere but I’m not hearing much. I used to trek up to Lewiston Lake in April every year, and fishing was always great.

Not sure Andy if there not Rainbows. It shows the last plant there was in February, 400 pounds of Rainbow Trout. They are planting Lightning Trout in McSwain this year.

Yes I can. Lake Amador and Lake Pardee are both good trout lakes in the winter and this time of year before the water heats up. Drive up the Carson Pass on Hiway 88 and you will find Upper and Lower Bear River Reservoirs and a little lake called Red Lake which has brook trout in it. Keep going up and you'll get to Silver and Caples Lakes. A beautiful drive in the spring once the snow melts and the wildflowers start blooming A little further out from you, from Angel's Camp go up Ebbett's Pass on Hiway 4, Lake Alpine is a dynamite little lake for rainbows. Stop in at Ebbett's Pass Sporting Goods in Arnold, talk to Bill the owner (super nice person) and tell him you'd like to fish the Stanislaus, he will put you onto some good spots with pretty good access. That's if you'd like to fish the river. I've always had good luck with Panther Martin spinners - the black one with the red or yellow spots. Nothing big, but lots of fun. It might be roaring this time of year, so you might want to wait til a little later in the spring. The best of all those for my money is Lake Alpine, but you'll have to wait til the snow's off the road because they don't plow past Bear Valley. Just look for the signs. They'll tell you wether the pass is open or not as you're going up. There are other lakes up there, Utica, Union, and Spicer Meadows, and if you're feeling really adventurous Highland Lake is at 8500 feet and has those brook trout in it. A truly gorgeous spot with really good access, if you don't mind a dirt road. Good luck. And let us know how you do.

Have you ever heard of Oxbow Reservoir? It's on the way to French Meadows off Mosquito Ridge. Not sure the road to French Meadows will be open, they don't plow back in there, but you can probably get to Oxbow, it's about 14 miles outside Forresthill Road. The last time I was up there - last year - it was not marked going to it, but it is marked going back from French Meadows. So once you've gone about 14 miles slow down and start looking for a turn to the right. And it's right around a curve and it's on you. What isn't on that road? Anyways, if you go 15 miles you've gone too far so turn around and in about a mile you'll see the sign. It's either Oxbow or Ralston, I forget what the sign says, they're both the same place. It is right on the confluence of the two branches of the American River, the middle fork and the Rubicon. As far as I know they don't plant it so all the trout in it are wild natives. There's actually no access to the reservoir, you would need a canoe or kayak or inflatable to fish it, but there is limited access you the river at the head of the reservoir and I have had some luck there. They are skittish so be sure to use light line, preferably fluorocarbon. And they don't like power bait. This is the place to practice your fly skills, if not with a fly rod then with a casting bubble and a ultralight spinning rod. That's what I do. Good luck. Watch out for that naked gal that hangs out up there.
