Is it wrong to use spincast?
Well, one and all. You can call me names, say I am ignorant, and perhaps I am. But neither my kids, grandkids or I will be seen fishing with a spincast reel. I grew up with bait casting, since there was neither spinning reels or spin cast reels at the time.
It remains a fact that in some quarters a spincast reel is considered a toy.(see the original post). What a lot of the problem stems from is a good intentioned relative buys an el cheapo Zebco toy for their boy, and it is junk which creates a bad image for him at a very young age.
So, I avoid all this hassle, personal preference, and what I have taught my kids, grandkids and great nephew. When a child is 5 or 6, they can learn to handle spinning quite easily, in my opinion. Just Sayin....RJS

Maybe a few times, but thatās a GOOD thing at our age !!
Prolly even squealed like a girl a time or two! š
Naaah, You're not ignorant, RJS, that would indicate that you are unaware of the specifics, you're just simply BIGOTED, towards those who don't do what YOU do and what you deem as "proper". Hypocrisy for you to say "I don't critize"(sic)........... spell check is SUCH a marvelous thing, these days....try it, you'll like it !
I'm betting you think having an automatic transmission in a truck is childish and wimpy, as well....is my F250 4x4 LB a "toy pickup" ?
Hehehe.... same analogy, ain't it ?
Tight lines, all.....this is an exercise in futility, bye.

Bob, have you ever fished with a Zebco Omega or Bullet? I have 2 Omegas and a Bullet, and would not call any of them cheap junk. I gave $ 100 (on sale) for my Bullet and have never had a single problem with it in two years. I doubt youāve ever touched one. Have you???
Randy: No, I haven't. I believe i fished once with a closed face spin cast reel that was green and may have been a Shakespeare, but do not remember. My main complaint is when you cannot see your line on the spool, you don't know what it is doing. Both spinning and bait casting allow this and not matter how grand spincast reels are, I will stick with shimano. Just Sayin...RJS

Iām not sure how your explanation has anything to do with a spincast reel being a childās toy or junk. You seem to have no basis for your comments, especially since you have NEVER used a modern spincast reel. Iām surprised a man of your integrity would ever āknockā anything they arenāt familiar with or have never tried.
I love you and your stories, and will just chalk this one up to
fiction. LOL š
Ps: I never need to see my line on the spool because it never messes up.

Growing up my Dad and Grandpa always used spincast so that is naturally what I always used. I have always been aware of the benefits of spinning, but spincast has always done the job for me so I don't see the point in switching and learning spinning. Well this week I am on a fishing trip with my fiancee's family to the gulf of Mexico, I have always been a freshwater fisherman so this is a new experience for me and they knew that. They all recommended spinning for the ocean so I went out and bought me a new pole. Despite researching technique before hand I absolutely embarrassed myself this morning. They have been telling me I am less of a man for using a "rinky dink baby pole" my whole life. Is this the common view? I never thought of spincast as a children's pole because it is what my Dad and Grandpa used. I know there are some lower end ones that are good for kids, but I am proud of mine. I have always just been a casual fisherman and only do it to go relax on the lake alone, so while I know spinning is better I never needed it. I want the opinion of better fishermen than me.

Take your spincaster out there, put up with their crap, and out - fish em. That'll shut em up.
My buddy down in San Diego caught what had to be a 35 or 40 pound halibut on one of those silver Zebcos. He had to go in the water with it to bring it in, but we ate it and it was delicious.
Randy, Fixorfish, and others: I am surpised this has turned into a pissing contest! Go back and read all the posts from the original one, where the guy is ragged by his bride-to-be's inlaws were the one on his case.
Just because I don't and wont use a spincast reel has nothing to do with that un-kind badgering he has received. Spincasting has recevied most of its reputation from the toy-like chepo Zebcos that are given to small children and are worthless! Advanced models are good reels, no argument from me on that score.
Because I have other preferences does not make me a communist, nazi, or an athiest! And I resent being "piled on" because of my stance. I did not say any of those things reputed to have been said to the bridegroom. So back off! Just Sayin...RJS

Bob, your preferences have nothing to do with what YOU said about the reels or those who use them. Iām just saying itās prolly better to NOT comment on things you DONāT know about. JMO
But somehow... you ARE comfortable with saying them to US....... so very many times ??!!??
FAR from a pissin' contest, here, RJ.
WE have have NEVER said or implied that spincast are superior to YOUR equipment, hell, we haven't even boasted that it is as good. But you choose to denigrate ours as "toys" .... just how in the world are you acting any differently than the prospective in-laws ?
Which you somehow DO see as wrongheaded.......jeeeez.
'Splain THAT.....Dude.
Iāve always used spinning gear for saltwater and spin cast for fresh. Iāve been fishing literally since I was 2 years and always viewed it as I would use my spinning reel for salt and spin cast for fresh. Now that I have learned more I use a bait cast, spinning, and spin cast for fresh and still only use spinning for salt (itās just what Iāve always done and it fits my requirements best). I say use what you wanna use, donāt care what they say, learn how to use spinning because it will benefit you fishing-wise since there are benefits to both, but donāt stop using a spin cast if thatās what suits you.
FixorFish: Are you denying that there are on the market right now toy-like, probably Chinese made spincasting rigs for a very cheap price? And these give event the best of their type a bad name, even if not deserved. You guys are swimming up stream. I seriously doubt you see any professional tournament fishermen using them. Whether there are not, the reputation remains. You may be too young to remember that everything in Japan was soon after WW II was considered junk because so much of it was cheap? Well, enough was cheap junk to give the entire country's production junk! Is Shimano junk? Hardly! It will take years to convert folks to consider spincast reels to be on the same level as all others. Just Sayin...RJS

I guess Iām just lucky that Iāve used Zebcos for 60 years and have NEVER had anyone make fun of, or ragged me for using one, till now.
Most real fishermen will look at your stringer of fish before they say anything about your equipment. Just sayinā...
In other words, results are what count. Iām sure youāve heard that before.
Zebco DOES make a ātoyā reel;
I have a couple that have lasted for years. My kids AND grandkids have both used them. Thatās a fact. Nuff said.

Definitely not wrong to fish however you want. You may have brought insufficient gear for a specific species but thereās not a thing wrong with spin casting in my opinion.
