Screw them. I have 2 Diawa Goldcast, a Zebco One Classic, 33 Platinum, and a Big Cat XT spincast reels that I use regularly. None of them are toys. The Big Cat reel came from the factory spooled with 25 lb. line and I throw a 4 or 5 oz. sinker and a whole live bluegill with it all the time and never have any troubles. If a spincast is what you like, use a spincast. Ain't nothing to be ashamed of.
I have a Daiwa Goldcast, I don't like it but my 10 year old granddaughter has no problem with it and that's what counts - keeps her from getting frustrated and does the job. She'll graduate to something a little more sophisticated one day - or she won't. Up to her. She's ganna be the beneficiary of all this good fishin tackle when I go, she's the only one with any interest at all.

Sorry you were treated that way. I think RJSamples should send you to his soda can fishing story. It isn’t what you fish with or even what you catch. It is all about enjoyment of the fishing. Don’t let them bother you.
you don't need a new reel....you need a new family!
I want to offer an apology for calling spin casting reels "toys"! All my experience, well most of my experience has been around tht $9.95 Zebco's and a mini rod. One of those is that kids will keep cranking when they are either hung up, or had a sizeable fish on. This does nothing but twist the line beyond use.
My father in law, Ike Walker had a spin cast reel I think was a Abu-Garcia, if there was such a brand. I used it some and it had both good and bad features. The bad feature is as I've described. When it was working and we were primarily catching sand bass, it worked fine, most of the time. I had just been raised and learne to use bait casting---and later adopted spinning as a second style. I do not remember the title of the prior post I made about the Mexican boys I encountered at the Falcon Dam and were catching sand bass with line, lures they had scavanged from the rocks on dam after the water had been lowered. An interesting lesson. Just Sayin....RJS
I started with a cane pole and bobber..my dad bought me a heavy ass shakespeare fiberglass bait casting rod with a zebco 202 on it when I was 9 years old!!!The reel is long gone but I still have that rod for over 50 years now!!I picked up a fairly heavy diawa spincast reel for it!!I still use it...inland and light surf and I always will!!!I have an arsenal of spinning rods as well but I will always spincast no matter what anybody says!! I prefer spincast but it doesn't fit every situation..that's why I bought spinning gear!!! Just have fun and do what makes you happy!!!Tight lines my friend!!

Well I couldn’t find it either. Why not tell it again. It is appropriate. Just sayin...

Thank you.
Spinning rod and reel just seem to be more fun. From the fish hitting, to setting the hook and the fight. Don't get me wrong I have my share of casting rods and reels too. It's fishing, it's all fun. My weakness isn't just lures it's rods and reels too. Life's fun.
Hello Jwid: I just posted the story, somewhat elaborated as "Falcon Lake Fishing Contest" Just Sayin...RJS
hey, if you are comfortable with a spincast outfit, use it. I have been fishing with one for over 60 years. I have caught bluegills to channel cats , and as long as i set my drag properly and have the right line for what and where i was fishing i never had a problem. I have used a baitcaster from time to time but overall i go with what i enjoy

guyrannosaurusfieri Hopefully you can find it and read it. I will again.
As long as you catch fish, it shouldn't matter. Something said for using what you are familiar with.
