Thank you for the super informative comment! I have always been vaguely familiar with the different types, but as someone who is extremely casual spincast has always gotten the job done. I knew I needed to buy the spinning for this trip and plan to make use of it in the future too. It just sucks feeling so belittled for not knowing how to use it.

Just remember and remind them that at some point they didn’t know either. Everyone starts somewhere, everyone.

I should say that the reason I catch more fish with the ultralight is mostly because I am fishing more. It’s fun again! There is a real chance that they could break the line and get away. The ultralight rod isn’t as stiff and it’s harder to bring them in. I tend to use smaller tackle because the smaller fish bite more, and with my combo they are able to fight. Big fish eat small tackle too. By using small tackle I catch the small and large fish. Compared to only fishing with large tackle that the smaller fish can’t even attempt I may only catch 2-3 large fish the whole day. So I spend all day catching small and large fish, vs only catching 2-3 larger fish the entire day.

I use spincast and baitcast. I’m terrible with spinning gear. Try as I may I just can’t quite get it down. I like the accuracy I have with spincast gear and baitcasters and lobe me a good Zebco. Use what you like. I’d be more concerned with being betrothed to such a judge mental family whom belittles you over their supremist attitude.

Fish don't care what pole you use. They do care about the bait you're using, how fast it's moving, color, size and where it's at.

Keep practicing with the spinning reel and you'll figure it out.

I grew up in Florida, using zebco spin cast reels for both fresh and saltwater. They make an 808 series specifically for saltwater these days, but I used the original 606 and 808 with no issues and proper care. These are larger reels intended for larger line, weights and fish. I myself brought in many large catfish, grouper, drum, jack and flounder (among other fish) with these reels. Zebco makes other, high quality, premium reels these days as well as the lower end "beginner" reels. The Bullet and Omega series among them, though oriented for the freshwater fisherman. Diawa spincast reels, as well as those by Abu Garcia are also popular. My father and grandfather both used spincast reels as well. Look at any of the older ads for these companies. Majority show adults. Zebco held casting records. Ease of use does not necessarily mean intended for children. Most importantly, unless fishing is your profession, fishing is a hobby or relaxing past time. There are few, if any, requisites to enjoy and be successful at the sport. It's about fun. Don't let others ruin your fun.

Dude: For small fish, like perch and crappie, your reel will work fine as long as you don't continue to crank when the line in hung or a fish is pulling it against the drag. You are going to face a bus load of criticism and joking about using a toy reel, though. If you have a tough skin and can take it without complaint, the go ahead. Yes, a lot of fising folks are insensitive and will harrass any difference, like fishing with a spinning reel held upside, rather than down! Just Sayin...RJS

Growing up my Dad and Grandpa always used spincast so that is naturally what I always used. I have always been aware of the benefits of spinning, but spincast has always done the job for me so I don't see the point in switching and learning spinning. Well this week I am on a fishing trip with my fiancee's family to the gulf of Mexico, I have always been a freshwater fisherman so this is a new experience for me and they knew that. They all recommended spinning for the ocean so I went out and bought me a new pole. Despite researching technique before hand I absolutely embarrassed myself this morning. They have been telling me I am less of a man for using a "rinky dink baby pole" my whole life. Is this the common view? I never thought of spincast as a children's pole because it is what my Dad and Grandpa used. I know there are some lower end ones that are good for kids, but I am proud of mine. I have always just been a casual fisherman and only do it to go relax on the lake alone, so while I know spinning is better I never needed it. I want the opinion of better fishermen than me.

Growing up my Dad and Grandpa always used spincast... (show quote)

A couple of things here. I have fished the Gulf for many years, and I have yet to see a spincast used down there. Secondly, when I was just a pup, I wouldn't use one because they look like a baby pole and they have too many limitations. I think you should take advantage of everything that you can, if you want to impress the future in-laws. (MHO)

Flyguy: I wanted to come right out and say it, but couldn't! You are more honest and direct. If this fellow can stand the jokes, harrassment, and snickering at his using a "toy" then go ahead. i personally would not. I wont even allow my great nephew who is now 8 and been fishing over a year to have one of those toys. He has learfned and is prefecting the use of an open faced spinning reel. He is even begging to be allowed to use the bait casting reel, but I don't think he is ready. Just Sayin...RJS

Nothing wrong with what your using keep practicing with your spinning outfit and tell the high and mighties that a bunch of your buddies said spinning reels are for wimps that real men use baitcasters. Now all you spinning reel guys don't get upset I'm only giving him ammo. I use both.

"toy reel" RJS calls it. And then says "a lot of fising(sic!) folks are insensitive"....are you referring to YOURSELF , RJS ?
Ain't nobody hating on spincast reels, like you do.... absolutely every time the subject comes up.
I'm beginning to think that there must be an incident, an untoward experience, a "bad day"... something put you in this stance, didn't it ?
Your above post is a backhanded "attaboy" if there ever was one.

Spincast reels are what they are....a simplistic design that allows the user (REGARDLESS OF AGE, RJS !!!) to utilize the ease of use, for the purpose ALL REELS have. They hold, release, and retrieve line....period.

I personally find "baitcasters" a giant pain in the a$$....and yes, I have them, know perfectly well how to use, cast, and adjust them, thank you. However, the fiddling with the knobs every gear/lure switch, the inevitable backlashes, the binding caused by diversity in retrieval (under load ? just skipping a frog lure ?) is just plain annoying....and I didn't go fishing to have to put up with annoyances.
All my "round reels" are relegated to trolling, these days.

Your choice of reel is entirely a personal one. The best way to shut the "diss boys" up, is to ignore and catch something.
I used to fish with a guy, back in college, who had the same cocky attitude about my Zebco 33, thought he was so much more a real fisherman because he had the latest and greatest equipment. Gee, Preston.... apparently having all that "great" gear didn't impress the fish, anymore than it did me. My stringer is full of dandies, yours has two dinks on it.... let's go, I gotta "houseboy" at the TriDelt house in 40 minutes....and I need to get these on ice !
That was 1973 and I still fish....he turned into a busy lawyer/D.A. and last time we talked....." haven't been fishing in years, I should dust off my gear and we should go, next time you come back to Kansas".... LOL !
We will, Press, we will.....I still have that "33".....and use it for catfishing, nowadays.

Lately I haven't even bothered to read the posts regarding "baitcaster help"....I still LMAO at the attempts to "teach" and the encouragement offered by those who regard BC's as the penultimate achievement in adult fishing excellence. Great entertainment....... just saying.

Dude: I really don't care what another fisherman uses as gear. I have been out fished by some Mexican boys using a beer can as a reel and scavenged line found on the rocks that been broken off when the lake was higher.

I do, however, recognize there are a lot of other fishermen who cannot resist ragging anyone who fishes with a closed face spincast reel. i refuse to allow my kids or grand kids to be subjected. I teach themhow to use a regular spinning outfit since i am the one furnishing all of the tackle. I don't critize others, in spite of what you may have guessed. I am glad for your success. Just Sayin...RJS

I’ve been fishing freshwater for 60 years now and have ALWAYS used spincast reels. I’ve caught bass up to 6 1/2 pounds and catfish up to 15 pounds and have never had a problem landing them on MH rods.
My favorite setup is a 7’ MH fast with a Zebco Bullet reel. Lighter rods are more fun for crappie and gills. Works well for me; that’s all that matters.
