I'm with Larry. No way I'd go down there now. Was bad enough before the drug cartels took control. Very very corrupt, so you can probably buy your way out of just about anything. But a lot of the people down there (not all of course) think gringos are a bunch of millionaires. So a twenty's just gonna piss em off. Good luck.

That was around 1968 and I had a pretty good job making around 3 dollars plus a hour so $20 was about a day of work for me. LOL.
Ok But you guys haven’t been down there in 20 years. I’m 75 and I’m not going to spend the rest of my life afraid to go someplace new. Brave words huh. I may fly to Cabo.
For what it's worth,I think that's a great idea. I love your spirit and if I had the balls? Or lack of sense? I might consider a trip like that. If you're gonna do it, just make sure your eyes are wide open. Chances are you would have a great time. I know if you go to Cabo and hire a guide you're gonna have a great time. Keep us posted and show us some pictures.

Flying would be your best bet.
Spirit and I aren't trying to scare you.
Check with the American government here to see if there are any travel advisory notice out, they do post them at times. Better to be forewarned than not.
I don't know when your going but they were just hit with a cat 4 hurricane recently. Check with your hotel about unsafe areas. More good people down there than bad just like everywhere else.
Last time a hurricane hit down there the government there didn't help anyone to get back home.
Have a good time I'm sure that you will lots of people do.
Enjoy.
Thanks guys I’ll keep you posted.
Flyrod,
Once you get across the Baja Norte line and into Baja Surf don't miss fishing the other side (Sea of Cortez) Bahi de Los Angeles, Loreto, Las Barrillas and La Paz. All of these towns will has fisherman happy to take you out for the day in thier panga. The yellowtail fishing can be phenomenal! Also plenty of Dorado and wahoo and giant grouper. Than you are only a couple of hours to Cabo for Marlin.

I agree as well! Always have eyes wide open! I'd be sure that motor home was running very well and well stocked too. That desert is BIG! Get information at the border about "Green Angels" and phone #s. Also be sure you know where all the PEMEX (gas) stations are on the route.
What’s your opinion about driving in Mexico. .? And thx.

Stay on the toll road much better.
If it's still a toll road.
Used to be you could get the Mexican auto insurance in San Ysidro at the border. Maybe you can get it from your insurance company.
I did that very trip SD to Cabo in 1979 with two buddies in a 69 be bus. The highway to Cabo was not nice back then! My wife and I fly into Mex once or twice a year now and do a lot of driving once we get there. We have seen most of Baja and and quite a bit of Nayarit and Jalisco. We plan on retiring somewhere down there in a couple of years.
If you are uncomfortable doing it alone. I know that there are groups of Americans that caravan down together in motor homes and trailers often. I too have heard the horror stories of cartels and kidnappings for ransom etc. Personally, I feel safer in most small Mexican towns than in the US these days! Been to Portland lately? Chicago? Baltimore?
Plenty of deisel fuel at every gas station!
I love the adventure personally! If we give into our fears and play it safe all the time we'd never leave the living room! Go do it! Just be as safe as possible and most importantly , Enjoy the ride!
That was vw bus. Surf trip!
