I took this picture last June from my porch. A small one, but was on the ground for about 8 miles. Trailer sales lot and one house were the worst casualties. Came within a mile of us. Really eerie.

When you here of the storm, you start watching to see where it might go. So you move your boat, and then the storm changes course, now you might be stuck in the storm. Some of the bigger boats with 12' beam width needs a crane to pull out of the water, then a truck/tractor to pull it, and it needs a cradle to sit on. Most of the docks have a few but not as many as needed. So the boats stay in the water. I am so grateful that I have lived thru many, and never had been hurt. The one that I remember was just after my father has passed. We moved out of lower end of New Orleans. We went back after the storm to see one of our friends trying to pull a telephone pole out of his house.

I lived on the south coast of Mass most of my live excep t when I was in Lafayette, La. on the gulf coast.Seen many bad storms, from northeasters, to hurricanes. New bedford mass took a direct hit from hurricane bob. I stayed at the shipyard just inside the hurricane dike and watched. Our shipyard did ok, the double and triple boats tied up did ok. !25 foot steel fishing boats on the other side of the river took a beating. 5 miles away in Padanarum, hundreds of boats were wrecked , thrown up on the beach, boats on trailers were crushed by trees, roofs on houses torn off and dropped on boats. 20 miles away in westport, mass. ,Houses found floating in the river 1/2 mile from their foundations, but almost no damage at trips boatyard 1 mile away. Point is... how far do you move yer boat? A 20 mile shift in the hurricane track can be the di f. between a cat 3 and tropical storm if you are in the lee side. You always have choices, do you move yer 20K pride o f yer life bass boat or do you do something about the 100 year old maple tree thats leaning over yer 300K house when noone can tell you within 40-75 miles where it will hit till 1 hour before? If 100 mph hits yer boat on a trailer it can be flipped over o r the roo f blo ws off the garage. There's a reason navy ships head to sea, safer for them 100 miles offshore than in port. but not many of us have unlimited funds, thousand of guys dying to do something cool, and boats big enough to ride it out. Very few can pull their boat 100 miles inland when a big storm i s coming Trust me, facing a storm surge of 15 feet, the last thing you are worried about i s yer bass boat when friends and family may be floating down a river.

Like plumbob said this was only a cat 1 storm. I don't usually get interested until winds get over 100mph. I'm not telling others to be that way but I lived in South Florida for 60 years, work for the power co for 37 and I guess I just got use to them.

You know what a West Va. divorce, a texas flood, a Carolina's hurricane,a Kansas tornado, and a California earthquake all have in common? SOMEONE is gonna lose a trailer.

Cat 1 is sustained wind, gusts can easily top 100.and yup, we all gamble about something that may only happen once in a lifetime or longer. What I can't understand... what happened to all the plywood people bought last year? I still have the generator I got long before the 97 ice storm. Handy then, just a matter of time till it will be again.I still routinely start, run it, and stable it, when the clocks change:)

As one who has never lived on the ocean, I have zero right to judge.... however, when we ALL know that the hurricane is coming, DAYS in advance.....why the hell are these boats always left in the water, tethered close to each other to bang into the dock and each other ? Makes no sense to me. Anybody have any legitimate reasoning ? Seems reckless and irresponsible to me. If that happened to my boat, I would be embarrassed at my poor ownership responsibility. Totally understand if you have a 40'+... logistics and such. However, LOTS of less than 40'rs in that mess, that could have been saved. Hope the insurance was adequate and current.
Thoughts ?
Reasoning ?
Excuses ?
Would love to hear some feedback from some "coasties", thanks.

FixorFish, you do have the right to judge even if you don't live on the coast. Im glad you posted your questions because a lot of others gave some very good commits and suggestion of what they would do. Thanks. Gordon.

Know how it feels or used to I should say. I have a whole home generator now. Put it in 5 years ago and guess what? Haven’t lost power yet. Go figure.

That's what I tell myself every time. I decide to buy one, then I talk myself out of it.

I suspect you have a smaller one to keep your refrigerator and freezers operating. Prior to the 20kw natural gas I have now, I had a 15kw gasoline generator. It ran the whole house as long as you started things in a certain order. Hope they get you online soon.

Nope talked myself out of that too. But we're on line now! We probably average 1 power failure every 3-5yrs. I plan on retiring in a year and a half. Within 6 months after that I'll be out of this God forsaken state! LAST ONE OUT, DON'T FORGET TO TURN THE LIGHTS OFF!!!!
