I've lived within 6 miles of the atlantic all my life and now I'm right on the gulf. Been they every hurricane since 1956 and I cant believe the hurricane did all that. Max gusts..not sustained wind, but gusts were around 90mph. This mess had to be a tornado that spawned off the hurricane. I've never seen a cat1 do that much damage

I’ll have to second that comment. We’ve had cat 1’s up to 4’s pass on both sides of us. We sustained roof, siding, window damage to the camp and high water damage to the downstairs on quite a few occasions since 1988. I think we had sustained winds of 110 mph during Andrew when we suffered most of the damage but not like that. As the crow flies we are about a mile from the gulf.

I dont know about the tornado being there. I do know the storm surge does cause this kind of damage. There was a tornado reported some where in NC

One of those reported was just 4 miles down the road from me. One house totaled and 2 others damaged. Trees snapped at the base, power lines dangling and personal belongings throughout the area. Not a pretty sight and i wonder how did anyone live through that?

Bertie County NC got the worst of it. Looks like a war zone. Other areas had the touch down and go tornadoes. They hit do a little damage and dissipate.

I've seen three tornados, one up close. believe me that's one site you don't want to witness, it's horrifying. Growing up and working in Huntsville AL. we had our share of them and been way to close to an F5 that took out a mile of heavily populated Airport road in 1989. The day after I found wheat straw drove into the side of a telephone pole by the wind. Google "Airport Road tornado" and you can see just what one can do.

I took this picture on the way home from work one day. It’s as close as I want to be. It passed me up so I pulled over while it was going over the bridge in front of me.

Those were some nasty pictures. I guess the reason I don't remember that was two months earlier Sep. 21st we wete struck with a Cat 5 hurricane. 160 mph winds. No power for over a month so got no news from around the country.

I just moved to southport last december and stayed to watch this storm. we were told it wasn't to be too bad but it turned out to be worse than expected. My favorite place to fish on oak island is not accessible. Scary.

It will get back to normal. Always seems like it takes forever but it doesn't. Get the power back and streets accessible then they will work on the parks and beaches.
