I've lived on both coasts, in Maryland for a couple years and in California for over 40. I've eaten crab all over the world. Had it prepared all kinds of ways. It's delicious. The best? To my taste buds, king crab from Alaska can't be beat. Needs absolutely nothing to enhance it's flavor - maybe a little butter.

I'm with you, Red Lobster usually has a 3 crab special around Sept. or Oct. They would offer King, Dung (can't remember the rest), than a third crab that I can't remember the name except I think it started will a b but was not a blue. My favorite has always been King Crab. I haven't tried spider crab. If it's small like a spider, no thanks.
Give me a pair of pliers, a fork and some butter. Let's get the party going.

I have eaten Snow crab- spider crab-king crab-box crab-Japanese crab which are really local crab and Dungenese. I have never eaten blue crab or stone crab. Of all the crab I have tasted Dungenese is by far the best. My nieghbor from Maryland insists blues are the best.. I was was wondering what every body else thinks.

I like Blue Crabs and Dungenese. Blue with Old Bay. Dungenese with butter.

The blue crabs here in South Louisiana can't be beat. The crabbers here make most of their money by shipping their number 1 crabs to the Chesapeake Bay area. To buy a hamper of #1 crabs here cost about $125+ that will be about 60 to 70 crabs. I catch my own and boil them for friends and family. Over the 4th of July weekend we caught and boiled 140 very nice crabs. Seafood restaurants can get $7 a piece for crabs. One place I know charges $129 a dozen.

As a kid, we used to catch or trap Jersey Blues in the Hampton Bays on LongGisland (local pronunciation).

To me its the Blue Crab thats got the best taste. Here if you catch a Stone Crab you brake off the biggest claw and through the crab back. They will grow a new claw. Dungennes is my 2nd choice. King crab clusters are $20.00 a lb. So I have never tried them.

Winn Dixie just had King Crab on sale for $12.99 a pound. Wife likes them best so I bought $62.00 worth. It made 2 crab meals for us. And I steam them with Old Bay. She uses lemon on hers and I use butter.

I have been lucky enough to have eaten most types of crabs fresh and frozen. No crab freezes well. Most frozen crab borders on uneatable or dip base at best. King crab freezes the best, but is still about 20% of its appeal when frozen. snow crab is terrible after freezing. comparing frozen to fresh is like comparing fish sticks to walleye. Both are fish but! As far as fresh crab goes, (assuming the crab is not over or under cooked, a common practice) Tanner is best in my book, but I have never seen it sold fresh. Blues are awesome, partly because the seasoning gets into them when steamed, That method of cooking does not seem to work on dungeness. I expect it is because the shells are so dense. I have had a little luck with removing the main shell and steaming, but still not like blue crab. Best way to cook dungeness crab is to just boil them in the water they came out of. It is perfect salt content. Most locals boil dungeness. If I don't cook while still out, I prefer to steam with shell off. It only takes 12 minutes. King crab is my favorite when fresh, but again very hard to come by unless you catch them yourself or have a friend who is a local crabber. Again, it is unfair to compare any crab unless you are comparing fresh to fresh RTKF

Back in the 80's, I traveled from Allentown PA to Maryland about once a year on business. My special treat was to go to a local place between Sparrows Point and downtown Baltimore and get what became known by my guests as my "triple crab" - crab cocktail, crab soup/bisque and crab cakes. All fantastic, but the most crab flavor was in the luscious cocktail!
My friends would jerk my chain saying I would probably order crab ice cream if they had it !!
Fond memories. I'm pretty sure the crabs were Maryland Blue Points, except once when the waitress said they were having a small harvest and they had to get them from Louisiana (bubble burst!)
King Crab is also mighty tasty. Now, when on the Cape, I get lobster rather than crab for those special meals.

Them Louisiana blue crabs are good too. Always full and fat. I usually catch my own and even catch stone crabs from time to time.

We use to catch a few stone crabs around Lake Pontchartrain but haven't seen them for years.

Years back I had a friend with a camp on Lake Catherine. We used to always catch them in the traps and it was always closer to the east side of the lake near the marsh areas. It’s the same in the Fourchon area. They seem to be in the marsh areas. Not plentiful but they’re there.
