A lifetime of fishing has seen me go through a whole lot of knives. I think a lot of them would still be excellent IF I could get them sharpened correctly. I look at lots of sharpener ads, have tried several but so far nothing lives up to the hype. If you have a go-to knife sharpener, please post the name of it, preferably with a photo of it, and describe how you use it and how it works. Not looking for a little pocket sharpener. Want something substantial, long lasting, good with fishing and hunting knives but also with high quality kitchen knives. Help if you can, please.....

I would suggest DMT Diamond Sharpener. The folded one. With red/blue mesh. It's amazing. Sold at Home Depot and of course online too.

Look up a sharpener called "work sharp". It's made by the folks at drill doctor. They have several models. These are not toys. They are serious tools that do work. Good luck

Got one of these for Christmas about 20 years ago. It's the real deal. Not fast, but does the job and does it real well. You want a razor blade? Here you go.

I have one of these too for when I'm in a hurry, it works. Not as good as the other one, but it don't mess around.

The work sharp sharpener can generally be purchased on ebay for less than bass pro & cabelas. There are several kits that include accessories etc. Make sure when comparing prices you have the same kit.
Natural stone is still mined in Arkansas, especially around Hot Springs. If you are hard core & want good natural stone's google Dan's Arkansas Stones. He mines & cuts the stones himself. Send him an email or call & he'll fix you up. We all have something in common with Dan, old age.

I bought a 2-sided (coarse & fine) Carborundum stone, in 1985 or 6, it measures 3"x8"x1.5" y it is still a VERY useable tool. I have "ran through" (due mainly to saltwater environment, on y off, over the years) probably 7 or 8 , or more 6" & some longer "Mill Smooth" files, in that time. I've lived and worked on many commercial vessels, the majority of which, were trawlers. I have dulled & sharpened all of my own (& a few other people's) knives since before I bought this Carborundum Stone.
I did also have an Arkansas Stone y I highly recommend that, for that razor-edge (after the file {if necessary} [I don't "automatically" start / the file, only if the edge was knicked or abused] and Carborundum have been used.) Then, for the kicker; to honest to Christ be capable of shaving with it, I'll unbuckle my belt y get on it like the Barber does HIS razor.
It "takes a minute" to get GOOD at it; but I persisted y am so glad that I did. That being said, there's multiple techniques employed by multiple people, as to HOW to go about sharpening, even considering only THOSE 4 tools. I've watched alot people get a good edge on their blade in ways that just don't work for me.
What finally got me to get right about it, was WATCHING someone else sharpen properly... Dude was on his back deck y mending a shrimp net, in early 1980, is when I recall first observing the technique that I roll with, to this day.
That also being said; I have from X to X "run into" more than 1 knife, that had me wishing for an electric sharpener.

I had a black handled Buck hunting knife back in the 70's that no one could put an edge on. Gave it to several folks who claimed they knew what they were doing, they all gave it back dull as I gave it to them. Finally ended up giving to the King of Enewetak.

Lansky Diamond set, or natural stone, will let you put a razor edge on anything. I have literally sharpened razor knives for my friends and they can't believe it. You can even get a stone just for serrated blades.

Get an EdgeMaker Pro. USA made in Ohio. I have used them for 30 years and they have a lifetime warrenty. Just pay return shipping. Great product and here is a pic. Randy Harford ordered one from Ebay I believe. Or order direct from edgemaker.com. About $16.00. I have filleted thousands of different fish and cut up a lot of deer and also sharpen my kitchen knives including the smooth blade Cutco knives in my full set.
