California. That's where I live. That's where I fish. You can argue that it's not the best, but it ain't bad.

I'm not a fly fisherman. I have one nice fly set up. I would think most fly fisherman would say whatever state they are in is the best. I think Fly fisherman have the advantage and could probably get fish to bite when all other methods will not work on any particular day. If a river or body of water is all muddied up then no one may get any no matter what.

I would say Montana if I had to say one particular state though.

WYOMING is hands down number one. Why,??? Cuz we don't have any trees to get hung up in.

I was thinking Wyoming and Montana. I have fished in both of them but I don’t fly fish much. Have friends here that do in Oregon.

It's frustrating for sure but all of that is well earned. Gates left open. Pastureland rutted and torn up. Livestock scattered and killed. Montana ranchers have been hard used and they take no BS from anyone however they are also some of the best people on earth and if you ask, access is often granted which is a plus cuz being posted means pressure is lighter and more fish.

Any state that has water with fish in it. I don't think anybody on this site has fished in every state to compare one over the other.

montana streams are so over crowded the fish and game is trying to get some new regulations in place for 2020,,of course if you happen to be buddies to one of the millionaires that come in from out of state and buy up all the water front MAYBE they will let you fish,, Montana was once called "the last best place" now it's called the last best place for out of state millionaires !! Idaho has some great fishing and millions of acres of public land.

It has been a lot of years since I fished Montana and so my knowledge is probably very outdated but it used to be that as long as a person was within 10' of the water's edge the access was public. So entry at a fishing access and up and down the streams on either side was open to the public for fishing. The biggest difficulty I ever faced there was gaining access to public lands because the roads in were gated, posted and locked. It is with sadness that I read you post lobo because it really WAS, The Last Best Place. Tight lines sir.

Allow me to take you about 4 miles or so east of Downieville on the North Fork Yuba, pull off of highway 49 into one of the many turnouts, a short (very short) walk down to the river, and you tell me you're not in fly fisher paradise. Unless you don't like to catch trout.

We go to Montana every year.
Along the state highway that runs along the Flathead Lake there are plenty on signs like this one. Our daughter fishes the rivers there. Plenty of river access. Lots of fishing at Glacier National Park.
I don't fish there anymore since they almost doubled the out of state license fee.
I would just fish for rainbows with bait, no fly fishing. So $80 isn't worth it for me.
If I would of been a fly fisherman it might be different. But that's a lot of money for just bait and wait fishing.

Utah is the home of public lands, and great access. A challenge to fly fisherman out there. See if you can catch a fish in the lower Provo River, a beautiful clear water stream with some huge Brown Trout in it. If you can, you are on helluva fly fisherman regardless of whether or not you catch a huge Brown.
