Definitely Florida!!! Bonefish to Tarpon to Snook to Permit... well, the list goes on:)

Did you get lost or take a wrong turn somewhere ? The topic
wasn't just which state has the best fishing, but which state
was the best for TROUT
fishing !

That last post may also apply
to you, Larry G; no offense, but
I don't think either Florida or Louisiana qualify as great
TROUT fisheries, which was the bone of contention for this
conversational thread !

Seeing "best state for fly fishing," I assumed that it was for trout. That's what came to mind.
But people fly fish for all different kinds of fish, both fresh and salt.
People here fly fish in the surf and San Diego Bay.
It's just not the same type of little flies.

Oops ! My mistake ! This thread DID start with fly-fishing (in
general), but so many responded
from trout-fishing states that I
got mis-led/confused ! Although
many people fly-fish for many other species, that is usually where my mind goes when/if
fly-fishing is mentioned !
MY BAD !

No problem Mr. Big A.
Fly fishing and trout just seems a natural fit.
People here fly fish in float tubes in the bay so that came to mind. Some post about their fishing in the other site that I go to.
Reels look the same.

It seems Montana wants out-of-staters only for their money. I paid their non-resident invasive species fee/tax/penalty once, no more! We simply AVOID traveling in Montana because of it. Couple dollars for residents, $25 for non-residents, what a MONEY GRAB!

Unfortunately you are right, and it has been that way for a long time. The natural bounty of the state has been over-popularized and the State has taken full advantage of it. There is no perfect place except home and even that has its drawbacks.

We used to pay $50 for an out of state license for the year.
Because we would stay there so long I would pay it so that I could fish whenever I wanted to.
Then they jumped up to these ridiculous rates so I stopped getting one.
California is just as bad. $50 about, if you are a resident. Give up your first child if your from out of state.

Try Idaho. Pretty good but there's a lot of private property. The North fork of Payette has some great fishing. Still expensive for out of state but not like that.

We drive straight through to Montana. Drive through Idaho on I-15.
Wife doesn't want to stop to see anything along the way. The little boy in me wants to stop and see the dinosaur museum in Ogden Utah.
But noooooooo!

Since these bureaucratic butt-holes seem to love 'squeezing'
sportsmen for their money so much, maybe they'd like/deserve
a taste of their own medicine !
Determine who's idea it was
(and who voted for it), round 'em up, and 'squeeze' their 'nads in a
vise ! Let's see how they like it !

Watch out in Florida. Was paying around $65 a year. Last time it was around $47. Asked if the price went down. She said no. Showed her my old one. Said they charged for lobster also. You have to till them fishing only

You have to have a salmon sticker if you want to fish for them in So Cal. It used to be considered just an occasional catch since they are so rare down here. Now you have to have a sticker to pay for, for something that you probably will never catch here.

Now we have to pay for taking a boating course to be certified to operate a boat here.
At least it's a one time fee I believe that the course is $35.
I haven't taken mine yet.
Just times $35 by all of the people who have boats in California.

You have to get a lobster tag to go after lobster here. You have to turn the report in even if you don't get any.
The tag cost money.
