Just googled him, not in my circles back then. Care to give us all a sample?

He always sings, raggedy music to the cattle as he swings, back and forward in the saddle, on a horse ( a pretty good horse) that's syncopated gaited , and there's such a funny meter to the roar of his repeater, how they run (oh how they run) when they the hear this fellers gun because the western folks all know, he's a high falutin, sure as shootin, son of a gun from Arizona, ragtime cowboy, talk about yer cowboy, Ragtime cowboy Joe!

PB : Speaking of bad influences; in my mid-twenties I alternated working in either the mills or shoe production/warehousing ! Worked one job with a couple of older women in their 30s/40s who were talking about their sons or nephews who were around that age (13 to15) and constantly into trouble ! One day they stopped their conversation and asked me what kind of kid had I been at that age; told them that I was the kind of kid my parents didn't want me hanging around with ! No more questions asked after that reply !

Speaking of singing cowboys, here's a little puzzler for you other, 'older' gents; who was the first singing cowboy in the movies ?

I think I'm not right but Gene Autry?

Good guess but NOPE ! I recently found some interesting info on that subject; back in the 30s, in his early movies before becoming famous, John Wayne played a character called 'Singin' Sandy' Saunders ! But wait, there's more !
He only lip-synced, as you might imagine; the real voice was that of the actual, 'true' first singing cowboy, a gentleman by the name of Ken Maynard ! The story is that Maynard starred in many western movies from the 20s/30s/40s in his own right, but until now I had never heard of him ! That seems strange, as I was a real western movie buff through the 50s, but never saw or ever heard of so much as even ONE movie with
him, and I was glued to that TV most every Saturday afternoon until my early teens ! Are there any 'older' gents out there who could shed a little light on this subject ?
I'm 70, and I never saw or heard of this character until today !

I think I'd heard that once a long time ago. Did to remember his name and know next to nothing about him.My Saturday's were always chores in the afternoons so I missed bunches of the old westerns.

Big A you are correct. We might have been exposed to the 40's when TV westerns were on but 20's and 30's don't recall much.

Maybe it's because they didn't show movies that old on network broadcast TV that I can remember; was (and still am) a
big fan of the 'Duke', but his movies prior to 'Stagecoach' don't interest me much ! Nor do a lot of those 'older', pre-40s westerns !
Still, if he was that popular in his time, it seems I should have heard of him long before now; he was, after all, a contemporary of Tom Mix, and who hasn't heard of him ?

Angel and the Badman was my first John Wayne movie that I really liked. About the others I'm kind of Mixed up. Mixed feelings? Mixed drinks? Oh hell, I'm old.

Angel and the Badman is one of my favorite 'older' John Wayne movies ! It was filmed here in Sedona, Az.; I know that because I've been there several times (beautiful area), and you can see
a famous rock formation in the movie background called 'Coffeepot Rock' ! Have also seen it in a few other western movies, as the area was used nearly as much as 'Old Tucson' back in those days ! Matter of fact, the Duke owned TWO ranch properties in Arizona back then; one around Springerville, in the White Mtn. area, and another in Casa Grande, about 40 min. south of here !
