I was anchored in about 13 feet of water, and approximately 30 yards from the bank in Jordan Lake, NC. I saw a juvenile water moccasin beside my kayak then go underwater. A few minutes later the snake was swimming head on to the kayak. I raised the net and it dove again. I pondered the probability of it crawling in the kayak, but stayed anchored…the fish were biting. About an hour and half later I made it back to the boat ramp and started unpacking the kayak. As I lifted the storage trays from behind my seat, I also lifted the water moccasin. It landed at the edge of the water and swam away…I thought. As I was loading the kayak in my SUV, I saw something go under my vehicle. It was the snake. I moved the vehicle up. It crawled back under the vehicle. I moved it up again, a fellow fisherman said the snake went back in the water as soon as I moved the vehicle. Just sending this out as a warning and to be watchful while unloading. Next time if I see a water moccasin in the water I’ll leave immediately, fish biting or not.
Thank you Buckeyefisdler. I appreciate the detailed response. It’s a shame that we have to be concerned about that.
Good Afternoon,
I could find no fish consumption advisories specifically addressing mercury and other chemical hazards, regarding fish caught out of Jordan Lake, NC.
What have you heard about the safety of eating fish out of Jordan Lake?
Thanks
Thank you. Will be fishing around Wilmington this weekend and will hit that spot on Jordan lake next week. Looks very peaceful. Thanks again.
Thank you Scribblehere!
I appreciate it.
Hey Again Bassfishinfool,
Do you know how long that part of the lake has been separated from the main lake?
Thanks
Thank you very much! That definitely helps. Looking on Google map, that looks like you’re talking about Beaver Creek canoe launch. It appears to have a gravel parking that goes right into the water. It looks like Pea Ridge Road cut that section of the lake off from the rest of Jordan Lake. Is that correct?
I will most definitely try that location on my next fishing trip to Jordan Lake.
My Sincere Thanks!
Good Evening,
Can anyone share good places on Jordan Lake, NC to launch my fishing kayak, and good places on the lake to fish. I went Sunday for the first time to the Poe’s Ridge boat ramp. Had a very difficult time getting my yak from the parking lot to the water and back out. Definitely not conducive to a senior citizen trying to haul everything. Would like to find a place a little closer to the water. I also can’t use steep boat ramps. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
If you don’t have a boat, Troyfrd1 has some great advice about the Johnnie Mercers Pier. Always a lot of fun. Very helpful staff. You can use light tackle if you wish or rent a rod and reel from them. Check out their website. Best of luck!!
Good Evening,
My grandson and I fish the Brunswick River near Leland. We fish in a small boat between the River Walk Park and the I-74 bridge. In this small area using mostly swim bait, jigs and live worms, we have caught flounder, stripped bass, large mouth bass, eels, gars, catfish, and red fish. We love it. You just never know what you’re going to catch. We have never been disappointed…except for the time I lost my anchor, and the time I flipped my kayak and lost all my equipment…lol
