Hello everyone,

I live in Homestead, FL. I'm in charge of fishing, when it comes to my children. We're looking for some on shore sites to both fresh and salt water fish. Any ideas?

Welcome Nandy13. Thank you for your service. I left the Air Force in β€˜78 from Homestead AFB and lived in that area until 1989. Nothing specific since it’ll be old info but you used to be able to fish from the Jetty at Homestead Bayfront park. (Saltwater) Black Point marina had areas you could fish from the banks of the canals leading out to Biscayne bay. Then there are the canals and lakes up near the airport for exotics like Peacock bass. Out on US 41 there were the canals that you could fish from and of course the lakes and ponds in the Everglades national park. We used to fish from the bridges in the Keys. Later on with a canoe that could get you into Holiday Everglades Park for freshwater. Sooo lots of opportunities. Eventually we moved up to boat fishing and offshore of that area is pretty spectacular. Anyway sorry for not being more specific but that was 35 years ago when I left to move further north in Miami-Dade Co. and now central FL. Tight lines and keep them kids fishing πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸŽ£

Were the minnies on a jig? Some sort of spinner?

Hello Fishdadd. Nope. Actually pretty simple rig that's basically a β€œTwo hook, minnow rig” like the Capps and Coleman minnow rig. They were a pair of professional crappie tournament fishermen I was told. Thanks for asking and best of luck.

Hey Wv Mike, thank you. And yes the females all had eggs but most were not fully formed. I’d guess close to spawning tho.

Did you catch them in shallow water around grass/bonnets?

Hey Micco24, yeah everything was caught slow trolling small minnows (1 1/4” to 1 1/2”) just outside the grass or just above the grass along the shore. We were only in 6-10 feet of water all day.

We had a busy day today. Today’s crappie catch. 19 keepers 13” largest 10 1/2” smallest. Plus maybe 14-15 (we lost count) smaller crappie we let go that were less than 10 1/2”. Additionally 2 large catfish that were let go, 2 bluegills, 1 warmouth, 1 pickerel and 9-10 bass. All the additionally fish plus the small crappie were released to grow and be caught again someday

Here’s a link to the FWC website. It gives coordinates to many artificial reefs in state waters. I believe Bay County has quite a few listed. Catch’em up and good luck.
