Fishing in SF Bay and San Pablo Bay is new to me. We want to go halibut and striper fishing but need to learn the ropes. I am considering using a charter service to learn where to launch, dock, fuel, live bait, etc;.

Is anyone using charter boats out of Richmond or Emeryville? Recommendations?

Where do you launch your boat and pick up live bait?

Any advice is appreciated.
Thank you.

Hey Tom - were you coming from in N CA. We fish quite a bit in the norther parts of the bay, Angel island north. For halibut we fish paradise to the San Rafael Richmond bridge. There’s also some good grounds on the south side of Red rock. Stripers are all over the bay. We focus on the brother/sister islands or the brickyard, on the troll or casting. We’ve been out the last few weekend and have found fish. Charters are fine, but they do travel a lot at times to find fish. I always believe in learning as you go. You can take your time and learn by trial and error and find the fish. Assuming you have a boat. We launch at Loch Lomand in San Rafael. Not cheap to launch but pretty easy in and out and the parking is usually not a problem.

Thanks for all the nice remarks. Trout fishin the streams and rivers was my first love and it's always nice to get back to that when I'm in Tahoe. I've missed it the last couple years.
As usual, I was driftin worms.
I found a brand new jar of salmon eggs in the edge of one of the holes I was fishin. Somebody probly dropped it when the water was higher and they couldn't get them. Now that the water has dropped some they were in about a foot of water a couple feet from shore. I just thought it was trash in the river and was gonna get it out. Nice surprise !

Drifting worms in my opinion is the best way to fish rivers and some lakes.

Had the opportunity to jump on the boat Saturday to see if we could find a few halibut. Slow day for us but we put in the time and ended up with 2 fish. Launched around 8 or so and back at the dock around 5. Fished south of San Rafael Richmond bridge and worked a pretty small area. Hope it starts to pick up soon.

Does that just happen to Halibut?
I've never seen that happen to any of the Stripers we net.

I really only see it on halibut. Not sure if their tails are soft or what. I’ve never had other fish do this. But every halibut will using a net.

What happed to its tail?

This is generally what happens when you net them. If we know the halibut is undersized, we will shake them off while they are on the side of the boat. I don’t want to send a fish back with a split tail. I see to many people netting everything they catch. Not good in my opinion.

Thanks for the info. The live well pumps in from the water so would need to get bait near the launch. You launch from LL? Is it worth going further south this time of year? Coming from the north bay it would be much easier head out from LL.

We have a yearly pass at LL. For us it’s the best place to launch coming from Petaluma and we fish sturgeon during winter and halibut spring and summer. It seems they catch fish earlier south but we’ve always fished the Northern area. We do well enough there’s really no reason to change our strategy unless we want to look at different shore lines. One thing I’ve noticed over the years. We are usually the first to the grounds and last to leave. And for us it pays off. Never venture to far from our areas. I see a lot and I mean a lot of boats fish around us for an hour and they are gone. See them at the docks and they catch very little and say they fished a few dozen places. In my opinion you put the time in and work an area you know produces you’ll catch fish! And save fuel. Just my 2 cents.

Trolling up and down the Pet, didn’t have a hit until 1:00. Haven’t decided where to go out offor the bay, probably Loch Lomand. Do you know if they still have live bait there? If we can find bait then drifting, otherwise trolling with frozen. Had been thinking of driving around to Alameda or Berkeley but not sure. All new to me.

Yep saw is correct. Live bait at Bodega tackle. It’s best to call if you get bait from LL to be sure they have it. We stopped using live years ago for a few reasons. Cost and keeping them alive for a full day was tough. We use frozen herring on both trolling and drifting. Last year was a little slower for us but previous years it wasn’t uncommon to have a 20 to 30 fish day between 3 of us. We have 4 or 5 spots we fish between the SRB and Angel island. I’m hoping to be back on the water on the 20th. Looks like decent tides.

Hey guys. Ben and I went out on the Napa today and we had a pretty good day. (Ben better than me)
We got out to the fishin grounds bout 0745 and we has 6 in the boat by 1030. I think we had only 1 in the livewell but most of them were keepers.
Fished awhile longer out there and we doubled our catch to 12 by noon. Put 1 more in the box.
Changed locations and Ben caught 5 more and I never got another bite. Put 2 more in the Box and called it a day and was off the water by 2pm. Total for today was 17 fish.
Just took 1 pic of Ben with the catch for today. The fish measured 2 at 20 inches and 2 at 21.

OH YEAH ! We saw an Osprey come down and hit the water, BOOM ! BIG splash . Then it finally got airborne and then flew right over the top of us. It had a fish that looked bout 20 inches long. Just like the ones we were catchin. Was SO cool.

Good to see you got in to them today! Looks like the Napa is producing more than the Petaluma.

Nice halibut especially for the north bay so early. Been watching the reports and they haven’t looked promising for halibut. Hoping to get in the bay for the first time ever in the next few weeks. Fished the Petaluma for 7 hrs today and came up with two fish, both keepers, with three lines in the water. Been really slow the last two months. Sorry no pics.

You bank fishing or in a boat on the Petaluma? Great ya caught 2 fish.

Where abouts you plan on fishing the bay? And you a live bait, troll or drift fishing?

We were out on the Napa last week and we fished HARD and never got a bite ALL day.

That’s crazy the bay seems full of stripers right now. We caught a few while sturgeon fishing a few weeks ago. Some guys I know have been catching many fish at China camp, Loch Lomond and the brickyard. You’d figure they’d be stacked in the rivers. Maybe your next trip will be epic!

Like you said GF, one is better than none! I have yet to get out, we’ve been doing repairs and maintenance on the boat. Going to launch it Wednesday and get out shortly after that as long as the shakedown run goes well. I’ll be sure and report how we do!

Oh I get the “repairs” thing. Last season we had to overhaul the outboard and wow was that a learning lesson. It’s always something.

We figured it was a little early for where we fish in the North bay. Wasn’t a great tide to fish and water was so-so as far as color. Where abouts do you and your crew launch and fish? I can’t get back out for a few weeks, girlfriend and family demanding a few weekends lol. Let us know how you do and depth and water clarity if you don’t mind.
