The shovelnose sturgeon in Iowa run about 5 pounds and live about 9 years. Other varieties get enormus in size but not here. We only have shovelnose.

Thanks GlennMc I'm gonna try bait shrimp and cut bait. I heard they are in the fast water. Are they tough to clean?

I think these in Iowa are smaller variety and can be kept at any size.

I found out that shovel or short nosed sturgeon have migrated into the Cedar River below Elk Run. They only get about 5 pounds iI read. Has anyone fished for these? What do you use for bait and how? Are they any good to eat?

We have invasive crayfish in my country, and it finally has been cleared up that with a normal fishing license we are allowed to catch them.

More importantly unlike fish we are allowed to keep as many as we want. (Fish have restrictions to keep the populations high.)

Unfortunately we can not use traps, so how to catch them with a fishing rod and bait?

When we were kids we took an old coffee can and drilled holes all over it. We ran fishline and hooks all over the can inside and out. we would tie a rope to it put dead minnows on the hooks and lower it into the water. wait 15 minutes and pull up a dozen or more crawdads. Anyway a hook and dead minnow will work. they grab it and hope they don't let go.

I would be happy just to catch one that was big enough to fill the length requirement in IA

read the article from the link. It is the record for catch and release in MN. Anyway I'm from Iowa and this fellow Iowan caught a giant Muskie.

Question: should trout be scaled? My wife and I don’t filet the trout we catch in Colorado lakes. We gut them of course, and cook them on the grill. When they are done we separate the meat from the skeleton and chow down. I’ve been told they must be scaled during the cleaning process or they’ll taste unduly “fishy”. Can anyone confirm or refute that?
Also I’ve read that, if the knife is wielded just so, the lower jaw and all the entrails can be removed in one motion. I’d like to see a picture of the knife cuts required to accomplish that. Does anyone have a picture, diagram or video that I could view?

I clean right their in the stream. Cut with knife at anal gland and slice up toward the jaw. Grab the jaw and gills and pull. Most of the time you get everything. I never notice any taste difference big enough to justify the extra work. I like my trout on the grill wrapped in foil and western dressing. or just dip in butter for a lobster like flavor.

Buy dead chubs from your bait shop and let them sit out and get ripe overnight. squeeze the guts for extra scent. use a 4 aught hook long shank and hook through the skull and tail.

Don't feel bad. I've been fishing almost my entire life and this year I got skunked with no fish more often than ever before. I think it has to do with all of the rain we have had early season. Last year I caught close to 250 fish. this year I've caught 3. Then last week my son and I went for bluegill in my hotspot and we never even got a bite until he dropped his bare hook in the water and a little bluegill bit it and hooked itself. lol. He caught one on an "F"ing bare hook!!!

Has anyone used the commercial made bait like Lucky 7. There’s a lot out there and have you did any good with them. Also how long can you keep them? And what about dip baits

The only dip bait that worked great was called "sewer bait" it was made in Des Moines

No weight. 4 to 6 # test line. cast out just the popper. it looks like a bug. jerk small jerks to make it pop on the water, stop every 3 or 4 jerks for a few seconds.

Let me see now. It is black and yellow with a white head and red eyes. It has an eye for the line to tie and a sharp hook. just like the poppers I use for panfish. lol
