It’s a topwater popper. Used for bass or maybe panfish.

Looks like a popper, used to use them all the time at my local pond for bass

Bass and perch love them. As do trout

I was thinking of using it as a top fly with a nymph on the bottom.

You can do that and it will act as an indicator, but the fly is meant to be stripped in to create action on the surface. Bass and panfish go nuts for these when you pull them in with quick short strips with pauses in between.

Thats.... not a bad idea. Ive been meaning to pick up some indicators as my dries dont float my nymphs very well. But the indicators ive casted casted poorly, and id like to get some poppers for local bass anyways. Seems like a solid twofer to me

Try using a ear plug too, depending on what type you use you may want to rub some floatant on it. I found cutting the ones I use in half and tying a knot around it worked fine.

That said I had no issues casting a thingamabobber.

Let me see now. It is black and yellow with a white head and red eyes. It has an eye for the line to tie and a sharp hook. just like the poppers I use for panfish. lol

I’ve never fished one of these but have a nearby bass bluegill lake so I want to try it.

How do you cast these? Do you add weight (split shot?) and if so, where? And help you can provide to a newby would be greatly appreciated.

No weight. 4 to 6 # test line. cast out just the popper. it looks like a bug. jerk small jerks to make it pop on the water, stop every 3 or 4 jerks for a few seconds.

Thanks Blackjack. I’m gonna try it this week. I’ll get back to you if I have any trophys to show off.
