Not sure why you’d need more range than free spinning to fish-can’t-run. Maybe instead a trigger or something that would allow you to temporarily increase or decrease the drag from its primary setting (I’m thinking in a spinning reel). Or drag adjustable via crank handle somehow. Or a clutch driven automatic drag. Or auto retrieve. Or a display that shows you your current rate of retrieve (not just a line counter that shows yards out, but a Speedo that shows something like 1 yard/sec). Or on-the-fly adjustable gear ratio. Or a handle that switches sides without unscrewing so I won’t have to murder my son who keeps switching my handle to the wrong side.

What about a reel that swaps from a 20 size ultralight to a 40 size with a different spool and maybe gears or something, kind of like my dad’s shotgun that switches from 12 ga to 20 ga with a barrel swap.
