Tell us all more. How much time on the pier and how many trout? I would imagine if didn’t use bait you could avoid the crabs and pest fish. Maybe fishing with shrimp (off the bottom though so not losing them to crabs) would get action, but just casting good lures (mirrolures, little plugs, silver spoons, etc) should get the trout and maybe even have chance at other gamefish. Mackerel might be around, and a lot of other types should be migrating. Keep casting!

We were just out looking at what was going on couple hours ..afternoon they were using shrimp.. and fish bites shrimp .. some had bloodworms couple people had 2-3 fish one guy was hitting them often .. he had maybe 12 or more

I will investigate ft Monroe beach front and look at the pier . Hopefully it will turn out to be a good spot . If you find any other spots I’d be appreciative. If you get in outer banks look up colington rd . It’s between Billy’s seafood market and the fire station .. it’s right over this little bridge . Few parking spots .. nice little hidden quite spot .. you can fish too

Welcome aboard topcat. Good luck and good eating.

Thanks ... I’m new to the Hampton area and only know about the buckroe pier and the James River pier . Both are not the kind of place I’m looking for to crab useing string and chicken neck . We used to crab off a dock that was close to the water at a camp ground on the Potomac River . We could use a net when pulling the string up . Net right under the crab . These fishing piers are too high up to crab this way and I’m having trouble finding a place to crab . You would think there would be thousands of places with all this water . If you find a place could you please share locations enjoy this beautiful day and thanks

Try the Buckroe beach Pier for Bay fishing. T here are many reservoirs, lakes, ponds and creeks with freshwater fish. Mahy tackle shops have the VDGIF publications to help you lacate areas. Good luck!
Jim

Thanks for your suggestion

Welcome to the Fishing Stage, Topcat75! Although I've spent some amount of time near where you're at; I've got no real, useful information to share... I was working on commercial boats at the time and tied up at Phoebus, just at the eastern edge of the Strawberry Banks, as well as near the mouth of the James River, at Newport News. Our "target species" was scallops; so... Someone on here, should be able to give some good advice. I'm thinking that there is a "member" in Chesapeake, Va. on here.
